I don't believe anyone is saying that one shouldn't take pride in who they are (although why one should be *proud* to be something they didn't have a choice in is beyond me).
Rather, it is that some people actively don't like this particular man and the way he chose to express that "pride".
As for myself, I am sad that any person could be so hate filled as this man apparently was.
