I think of it as a trade-off. With paper magic, I have like 5 people to play with, unless I wanna hang out in a smelly Wizards store and play multiplayer games with some Junior High kids who will try to argue with you about who would win in a fight between Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, even though you don't give a shit.
With MTGO, I can play with thousands of different players; test my deck against more people who know what they're doing, and then use cardshark to buy paper versions of my online deck and school the 5 people I can play with in RL. Also, on those nights that I can't sleep, there are ALWAYS people on the server to play with.
