Hey folks, just wondering if there were any junkies like me here in the forum.

I just recently got sucked into it through pressure from various friends and then the server crashes for 4 days! Pretty bad service by any standard.

For those who don't know, I'm talking about the online version of Magic: the Gathering, where you pay money to buy virtual cards and play with them on their server. I must say when it works it's very nice to have the computer to keep track of the game for you, eliminating all rules questions. The thing that sucks is it seems the company can't or won't spend the money it takes to run a real online game, as evidenced by the instability of the system.

I know there are other Magic players here, are any of you online?

Yup, I'm on MODO. Despite the server issues, it's still the best way for me to play and enjoy magic hands down.

Ha, I remember playing that game in 4th-5th grade. We always cheated, though. I stole good cards from other people's decks, and they did mine :P

And I have to agree, it is the best way to play and enjoy Magic. No need to shuffle, computer keeps track of everything for you, you can have the same card in multiple decks, everything's just great when it works.

i played for one month .. than i lost interest , somehow it does not feel like playing with friends and have a good time ... everybody wants only to win

cradeg, yeah, I agree that it's a different vibe completely than playing with friends...some nights involving some booze, some unglued, and a group of people that were near and dear to me were some of my favorites. But I'm living in an area with no interest in the game right now, that combined with the fact that it's 24/7 for the most part makes it my best route. And even though it is completely different (I know that despite going to a local tourny now and then that none of us had a firm grasp on the rules, for one) I still enjoy it. It's almost the difference between playing dodge ball and chess, for me.

at first i was addicted too but i cant explain it ... i just lost interest

, i am not that hardcore gamer and alot of people play it online but dont say one word through a 45 minute game .. this just makes it no fun for me

Yes, unfortunately there are lots of rude players. One night I had three separate people just concede the game to me on the second turn without saying a word or telling me why. I've also read posts by people complaining about the behaviour of players who think it's cheating to have too many rares in your deck or play a Goblin deck.

But like Pellaz said, the 24/7 aspect of it is just too good. Sometimes I just want a quick game so I log on and play a bit. It's kinda hard to do that with real people, especially at 2am.

I was addicted to Magic back it middle school, went to tournaments and stuff. Once highschool came however pretty much everyone stopped playing. BTW Does anyone know how much a complete set of Revised Edition goes for? I still have my collection and am thinking about selling it before the cards become TOTALLY obsolete.

I did a google search and found some website that's asking $300 US for a complete set of Revised. Where you could really score big is if you have multiple copies of the big money cards in the set, such as Dual Lands, Birds Of Paradise, Wrath of God... I recently sold my play set of Dual Lands (4 of each) for ~$500 US on ebay.

Just to make it clear, there are 10 different Dual Lands, so 4 of each is 40 cards; selling the set for $500 means I got about $13 a piece which isn't that outrageous. It just looks like a lot because there were so many cards being sold together. Now if you have any of the Power 9 to sell, then we're talking big bucks...

lol, also, to really blow your mind, last time I checked a foil version of Reya Dawnbringer on MTGO was bringing around 121 dollars.

Hi,
I had some interest in the game when it came out... until I read you had to pay for virtual cards

. I would've been happy paying a monthly charge or something like that but I don't want to have to pay the same amount of money to play a game against a faceless opponent and not actually have the cards in my hand. I figured since I've matured out of it (yet still nostalgic for the good ol' days of tournaments and such) I might give it a try, but once I read this I lost all interest.

you have to pay for virtual cards, that blows. What I used to do was use the old Magic encyclopedia program, bring up the card pic I wanted, did a 'copy screen' then pasted that into Adobe. Print them off and play with your buddies. It's not over internet, but hey, it's fun when you're in somebody's face.

I am definetly a MTGO (sn: The_Sensei) addict, much to the detriment of my grades and job prospects. My rating for limited is 1833 and constructed is 1675. I think I draft like five times a week. The stability is certainly an issue, I've put about $200 into the game but sold $85 worth of cards last week to lessen the risk in case all of the servers suddenly crash. (I found this thread while looking up NBCs Apprentice, lol.)

Yep, been there done that..... I have right now a serious paper cards selection. Thinking about selling actually. The majority is split into tournament decks. I have some practically unbeated, piss people off decks. I had a nice collection I sold on ebay for $1k then took a break and built another collect. No crap - all very rare rares.... I played online for several months. Not the same as kicking peoples ass and seeing their faces.....

I don't play MTGO, but I do use Apprentice. I think it's pretty fucking retarded to pay for cards that will disappear forever if the server blows up. Besides - in Apprentice you can translate your decks verbatum without spending any money or wasting time trading for someone else's imaginary cards.

Please. The same argument can be made for the likelyhood of your house burning down and destroying all your paper cards. Only your house doesn't have a backup.

Apprentice is an excellent tool to practice for free and to be able to play with all cards printed in paper, but aside from those two, it's got absolutely nothing on MTGO. Apprentice is just that, in fact-much more a tool of than the game of magic.

I am a hard core Magic addict. I dont play online though because I find it a rip off to pay for virtual cards. MTGO is appealing though because you can play any format whenever. But since I have no money I guess im stuck going down to the comic shop every weekend for a type 2 tourney.

I think of it as a trade-off. With paper magic, I have like 5 people to play with, unless I wanna hang out in a smelly Wizards store and play multiplayer games with some Junior High kids who will try to argue with you about who would win in a fight between Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, even though you don't give a shit.

With MTGO, I can play with thousands of different players; test my deck against more people who know what they're doing, and then use cardshark to buy paper versions of my online deck and school the 5 people I can play with in RL. Also, on those nights that I can't sleep, there are ALWAYS people on the server to play with.
