I've not had a tubal ligation, but I have had a laparoscopy, which is a similar procedure. They cut several incisions (belly button, just above the pubic line, and over to the side of the abdomen, by your hip bone), fill the abdominal cavity with air, and then go in with various instruments (including a camera). A ligation is more complicated because they are actually cutting things, but I did have my appendix out while they were in there looking for endometriosis. Bonus!
It was agony for about two days because of the air in the abdominal cavity - basically hurt like hell to be in any position besides standing or lying propped up on a pillow, and getting between the two positions was very painful. They gave me good drugs (percoset) but it was 3-4 days before I was able to move around comfortably. The incisions themselves were fairly minor and didn't hurt much, although the one at the pubic hairline left a visible scar. The other two incisions are hardly noticeable.
A vasectomy is MUCH less invasive, and has a higher chance of being reversible if Dave does change his mind in the next 3-5 years. Pain's gonna vary based on individual sensitivity, and the kind of procedure they do, but I've heard it's usually much less painful than Clavus's experience.
