Carmelo Anthony Snubbed from NBA Sand Box
Carmelo Anthony was denied access to the Sandbox in the yard behind NBA headquarters on Monday afternoon, and he’s beginning to think the league has it in for him.
“Don’t nothing include Carmelo,” said Carmelo. “Nothing in the NBA includes me. You realize that? I want my mommy.”
Only a few days after expressing dismay that he believed the USA Basketball selection committee would not select him to play alongside fellow NBA rookie phenoms LeBron James and Dwayne Wade in the Athens Olympics, Anthony was not allowed to play in the sandbox on the playground at NBA Headquarters.
“I just wanted to dig a big hole or maybe play with the big yellow dumptruck,” said Anthony. “But Deuce [Allen Iverson’s son] was already in there and he wouldn’t share the shovel and he wouldn’t even let me near the Tonka truck. I told him my dad would beat up his dad if he didn’t let me use the sandbox, and he threw a little shovel of sand in my face. Finally, David Stern came out and told us to play nice, so I went over and tried to get on the monkey bars.”
Anthony left the sand box a shambles after Deuce Iverson wouldn't share the Tonka truck and threw sand in Carmelo's face
The monkey bars, however, were being used by Shaquille O’Neal’s son, Shareef, who wouldn’t let Anthony on until he was done. When Anthony tried to shimmy across in order to beat Shareef to the slide on the other side, Shareef pulled several of Anthony’s long dreadlocks until he let go of the monkey bars.
“No fair pulling hair,” shouted Anthony. "I'm telling Mr. Stern!"
“After that, I just left the playground. Don’t nothing include Carmelo,” continued Carmelo.
"I just wanted to play with the big yellow dumptruck ...Don't nothing include Carmelo."
- Carmelo Anthony The NBA playground is usually reserved for the children of NBA executives or players who are in town to meet with league administrators. Anthony was in town to officially complain about how the NBA is conspiring to exclude him from all awards or all-star competitions associated with the league.
While he was waiting, he decided to go out and hang with Allen Iverson, Jr. in the sandbox, but he was sent away crying when he was once again snubbed from an NBA event.
Anthony’s feelings have been hurt throughout his rookie season in the NBA. He cried himself to sleep the night he learned he wasn’t being selected as a reserve for the NBA Western Conference All-Stars.
“I didn’t want to be no All-Star anyways,” said Anthony at the time. “Don’t nobody pull the wool over my eyes. If they don’t want Carmelo at the All-Star game, Carmelo don’t want to be there. Shit.”
The obvious prejudice against Anthony continued after the season, when he was passed over for the NBA Rookie of the Year Award in favor of LeBron James, despite the fact that Anthony led all rookies in scoring and propelled the Denver Nuggets to the playoffs almost single-handedly.
Carmelo was seen leaving NBA headquarters late Monday afternoon in tears after there was no room for him in the elevator. He was forced to walk down 34 flights of stairs after NBA stars Kevin Garnett, Shawn Marion, Paul Pierce, Richard Jefferson, and their entourage’s filled up the elevator.
“Ain’t no spot for Carmelo in the NBA elevator, neither? Homey don’t play that,” Anthony was overheard muttering as he left the building.
