2) In standard usage, it does not copy from the iPod to the HDD. You need 3rd party software to do that. Think of the iPod as a copy of your HDD music library.
3) Yes, and you don't have to partition it, just use the space as you see fit (noting, of course, that you have a little bit less than 40 GB).
