I own an STG58 by DSA, and can't say enough good things about it. I much prefer it to the M1al; the ergonomics are better, and it has a much lighter recoil, although it is slightly heavier.
The M1a's big perks are superior sights and easier scope-mounting. FAL sights are pretty crappy, but the rifle itself is capable of being much more accurate than the M1a, with proper sights and tuning. My own weapon will do 1-1/2 to 1-1/4 MOA over open sights all day long.
I'd suggest buying the STG58, getting a trigger-job, and some of the Israeli target-type sights that DSA sells. Such a platform is more than equal to the M1a in the hands of a good rifleman, and will save lots of $$ on magazines and parts. With one of DSA's six-screw scope mounts and a low-power scope, and FAL is about as perfect a battle rifle as anyone ever came up with. You'll also want a set of synthetic fore-gaurds, as the aluminum ones that come on the STG58 heat up quickly.
