Virgin Suicides was the first book. No official rules were set up as to how books were picked. First come, first served seems to be working. (Basically, if you want to read and discuss the book, great, otherwise wait til next month - when there'll be a different book)
The only suggestion that we had for book selection was that it not be a "best seller" since many folks rely on the library, best sellers are tought to get. (DaVinci Code has been around for so long, I don't think finding it is an issue)
