I have a Benjamin that I got from Walmart for about $100. It's a heavy duty, bolt action type of weapon that is pretty damn accurate, although the trigger is pretty stiff. I've put .177 pellets through a metal shed, and even shot a few feral cats (fucked em up pretty good but I didn't go for a killing shot).
I'd advise against shooting birds. I used to do it when I was little, but I cleaned and ate them. They're all a part of nature and they don't really hurt anything, but it's your call.
