Air Rifle

I'm looking to get an air rifle. I sit around on my porch and shoot birdies and stuff that come around.

It's all for fun but me and my cousin do it together alot when we are bored (Which is alot). We keep track of how many we each get and each month we have a winner.

Well anyway, I wanna get one thats gonna shoot well. I'd like around 1000fps but if its accurate and 750fps I'm all for it too.

Also it has to be able to shoot pellets, which I don't know if they make any air rifles that can't shoot both so I'll just throw that out there if it does make a difference.

I've checked out a Remington, and I trust remington in my shotguns and rifles, but this is a whole nother ballgame, I don't know if they take the time to care about their air rifles as much as they take care of their true hunting/target weapons.

There's a few places around here that sells them but I really have no idea what to look for in an air rifle so any help would be appreciated. Thank you much.

Happy Hunting to everyone

I've never had a problem with Gamo. I would reccommend the Hunter 440 for a 1000fps bird gun.

If you really want to look badass as well as pop birds left and right, you could go for something a little more advanced

And finally, the traditional multi-pump Daisy rifle. http://www.airgundepot.com/856f.html Sure, they say it's only 300-600fps depending on the model, but the $30 one I got at Walmart that gives 310fps at 10 pumps got a pellet to break the sound barrier (estimated veloicty 1600fps) after 170 pumps

Very nice, you personally have a Hunter 440? Thats excellent pricing and the FPS is so nice for getting killshots.

Wow, how do you know it broke the sound barrier? Thats like... Craziness for a air rifle!

While I can't condone shooting birds just for the count, I enjoy air guns so much that I can't not chime in here.

In general, a break-open barrel is not going to be as accurate as an under-lever or side-lever rifle. The 1000fps claim is made using the lightest possible ammunition in .177. You'll most likely want to use heavier ammunition. For birds, .177 is sufficient. If you're wanting anything larger, go with .22. And, speaking of pellets, buy good ones. They're worth the extra money but are still fairly inexpensive. You don't need match grade, just avoid the Crosmans from K-Mart.

If you buy a spring-piston rifle and put a scope on it, make sure it is a scope rated for air rifles. The Talon that MrSD pointed you to has its own air resevoir--one that you will have to recharge. This are usually quieter than springs, but also heavier and you do have to recharge them. On the plus side, they are often adjustable for velocity.

For a basic air gun, Gamo is good, but they do have some shortcomings. If you need a repair, they are the only ones who will work on them. Their trigger is not very good. They claim to be a two stage trigger but it isn't and it is very easy to strip their adjustment screw.

Consider Beeman and RWS. Both Beeman.com and AirGunExpress offer demo rifles for sale so you can usually get a pretty good price on one.

Sorry that I can't say anything about the Remingtons.

Hope this helps. Try not to shoot your eye out.

I have a Benjamin that I got from Walmart for about $100. It's a heavy duty, bolt action type of weapon that is pretty damn accurate, although the trigger is pretty stiff. I've put .177 pellets through a metal shed, and even shot a few feral cats (fucked em up pretty good but I didn't go for a killing shot).

I'd advise against shooting birds. I used to do it when I was little, but I cleaned and ate them. They're all a part of nature and they don't really hurt anything, but it's your call.

I have to put my two cents in here as well. While I'll not knock the gamo rifles as I don't own nor have I shot or researched them, I have found their handguns to be very poor for the price. But then, most handguns in the $80-150 price range aren't all that impressive anyway.

I do have a $40 Powerline 880 with a BSA red dot sight that is deadly accurate. So, I imagine the $100+ Gamo will be every bit as accurate. I really like the red dot sight as it did add plenty in the way of accuracy to the air rifle I have.

I guess what I'm trying to say is do some research, put your hands on a few and have fun... Oh yeah, kill some birds, too. ;-)

One last thing... Ammunition is one of the best way to improve accuracy. Buy the good stuff of the internet and stay away from the crap pellets. H&N is the shit. 12 bucks for 500 will get you a 2'' grouping wheras 2 buck for 500 will get you a 6'' grouping.

Look into the Beeman air rifles, I've owned the C1 Carbine for 20 years and it shoots as good today as the day I got it. These air rifles are very powerfull and accurate. A good source is www.airgunexpress.com I've picked up some great deals on accesories and they often have closeout deals.

10 minutes, a sore wrist, and one hell of a blister. I know someone's going to take that out of context, but that's the truth.

After reading a magazine article about South African air rifile enthusists, we started going to the edge of our base to snipe rats. It was a lot fun. Hell, people can always come up with a good reason to whine about someone killing innocent pigeons, but no one ever says boo about dead rats.

I have my self a daisy pump/co2 air rifle, no idea what model, but i've had it for a good 10 years and it still works to this day.

I also have a crossman pump (walmart style, super cheap, but works and is even older then my other one.

Both guns to this day sit at our back door waiting for whatever poor living creature passes by. (Usually Woodchucks, we are loaded with them.)
