Going back into my memory banks when i was an assistant athletic trainer for the football team.
RICE was for when there was swelling -(Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation)
Once the swelling went down, then heat should be applied
if there's no swelling, I'd probably alternate between heat and ice - Heat is good for loosening up the muscles and joint stiffness, ice is good for the pain.
Massage in the area to get blood flowing also speeds up the healing process, but if massage causes pain, then stop.
I've always kinda felt that wrapping it and slings and such really are only good for sympathy, but in all seriousness, try it, if it makes if feel better, then use it-- just when wrapping it, don't wrap too tightly.
