It may have been a prototype car from the factory that was destroyed after testing.
A friend of mine has a 1989 Corvette ZR1. That is right, 1989. It has an X serial number on the frame. Chevy and Lotus used them for testing then destroyed them in a junkyard in England. An entrepeneur found them and shipped them to the US, where the flattened cars went for huge money.
