Part of the problem for Japanese women is The Japanese Mother-In-Law. By custom, the mother-in-law rules the daughter-in-law, who may have to take on extra duties for her husband's extended families and obey mom-in-law 's every whim. Unless her husband stands for her, and they apparently never do. So why would a free, single woman walk into something like that?
Also, Japanese work culture helped lead to the sexual/cultural shift. Japanese sararimen (corporate employees) are supposed to work long hours and then socialize with their bosses and co-workers. They really don't spend much time at home. They live separate lives.
I believe there was a survey of Japanese male teenagers some years ago about the things that were important in their lives. Their personal computers were Number 1. I think Dad was down there at Number 7. He's just not around.
