.50 caliber simply refers to the diameter of the bullet.
How much power (and recoil) are involved depends on the propellent.
A .50 AE isn't anything really, plus our forefathers regularly shot larger diameter bullets out of muskets.
Now a .50 BMG is a serious shoulder breaker, which is why those rifles have serious pads and muzzle breaks.
