I would NOT want to fire a .50 cal (even if it is a short round) with a rifle that weighs 8 lbs. When I fired a Barrett .50 cal BMG load with a full barrel and no muzzle brake, the thing literally blew me and my mat back about 6 inches from where we started, and I weighed probably 175lbs at the time.
If you want to see a SWEET piece, check out the L&G .50 cal upper that bolts to an AR lower with no mods. Full length barrel, muzzle brake, and a .50 BMG round is loads of fun on a Bushmaster lower with a Jewell trigger : ) First saw that one at commercial row over at Camp Perry about 3 years back. |

How much power (and recoil) are involved depends on the propellent. A .50 AE isn't anything really, plus our forefathers regularly shot larger diameter bullets out of muskets. Now a .50 BMG is a serious shoulder breaker, which is why those rifles have serious pads and muzzle breaks.

Man that is awesome especially with the pic of the steel plate it resembles the surface of the moon. Now I believe that aliens used the moon for target practice with some big guns.
I dont have a pic on me but I've heard of a Pfiefer-Zeliska revolver that uses .600 Nitro Express cartridge that was originally used for elephant guns. I think it was mentioned at the time it was introduced early 1900's? it was the most powerful rifle cartridge. ps. I found a pdf on the revolver I was talking about but I have no Idea how to rip pics off the pdf or how to get the pdf on this thread. Any help? Last edited by Asuka{eve}; 05-27-2004 at 12:42 AM.. |

I saw that and your nutz for shooting a .50 BMG with no muzzle brake. I've shot a .50 BMG with a muzzle brake and the kick isn't too bad. More like a push than a kick.
The hardest kicking gun I've shot so far is my shot gun with 3" mag slugs. Oh yeah. The gun that guy shot had a muzzle brake and it still kick him back half a foot. I dought it hurt like that .50 BMG must have tho. |

I don't think a 20mm anti-tank gun (read:cannon) is in the same class as a .50, and about the .50 M16, what the hell do you need that for? And no way in hell I would pay 5 dollars per round. I prefer my rounds to cost about 8 cents per, a la 7.62x39.

This is getting into the territory of the old British Boys Anti-Tank Rifle. (Boys being the company, not children.) It could take out trucks, but was useless against anything higher than an PKW II.

If the recoil is lessened, can the round still go through an engine block? The Browning 0.50 round is specifically designed for scenarios where you HAVE to go through your target. This seems like a curious amalgamation that has no real purpose but to have people go "WOW THAT'S COOL."
The small cost of the conversion kit ($1440 isn't that bad) is worth it if it makes the weapon a true AMR (anti-material rifle), but if it doesn't then there's no real point.

I've had a go with a .50 cal single action. Basically, it was an extremely long range "sniper" gun of sorts. The kind you would take out a vehicle with. We were shooting incendiary shells out of it...you know.. for fun..
Anyway, that son of a bitch KICKS.. and even with the padded shoulder vest, it hurt like hell!

http://www.gunblast.com/images/50Beowulf/Mvc-005f.jpg It's not that big. It won't go though engine block. It won't go long distances. |

I like the 20-25mm smart rounds instead of .50. cals. Why simply punch through a wall when a person can be shot through a window and killed by fragmentation. The rounds are heavy but way more accurate and with less kick than conventional rounds. Sadly I think the Army went with the X8 instead until energy weapons are ready.

The gunblast.com article was where I first saw the Beowulf .50 about a year ago. Personally, I'd snatch one up in a heartbeat, for a few reasons:
1) 3-inch groups at 100 yards? Good enough for me, be it hunting or a firefight. I wish I could always kill targets with one shot from at least 800 meters, but the real world ain't like that. 2) Recoil? Well, it'd probably be solid, but not horrendous. Remember, that buffer spring in the stock or the AR-15/M-16 can take a pounding, and it can always be upgraded. 3) Picatinny rail for optics, and/or thermals? Hell yeah. I wouldn't have to clear a room the old fashioned way, I could just blast through a damn cinderblock wall if I need to. Presto - room clear, at no risk to me! Okay, so maybe number 3) is a bit of a fantasy, but I'd still love to play with one of those things. I've got 14 30 rd. magazines for my -16A4, and the .50 Beowulf can go about 12-15 rounds in those. That's a LOT of playtime! Then again, you put it like that, I'd be walking around with about $1200 worth of Beowulf ammo on me if I had all my mags filled...
