It's not your requested area, but... an area that I wouldn't overlook is the Fort Washington or Inwood sections of Upper Manhattan. It's damn near the end of the A line train which runs express. I lived there for a bunch of years, paid an unbeleivably low rent for a doorman building, river view, and a huge apartment. There were also tons of musicians in the area.
