NYC for the summer, please help
Hi all
I've decided to go live in Manhattan for the summer and i need some help if anyone is around there. 1. I am searching heavily for an apartment in the upper west side, somewhere south of harlem and north of 40th street. Sublets are great, roommates are fine if we click, etc. If you see or have suggestions where i can look, i'd be greatful. 2. I want to either be employed or have an internship so i'm not totally bumming. i've sent resumes to the lincoln center, metropolitan opera, places like that, but i havne't had much response. If anyone knows any places large or small i may contact, please lemme know. Any advice is appreciated. if anyone wants to meet up for lunch, etc, i know a couple places i wanna go back to and it'd be fun to put faces and personalities with names. Thanks greatly for any advice/assistance. I hope this works out well.

regarding your apt: When are you planning on getting here? I may be able to help you out a little. In any case, check Craig's List.
regarding internship: Good luck - have you tried Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society? I know they have had summer interns in the past. lunch: When will you be here? I'll be around most of the summer. Lunch would be fun. I could probably get Supple Cow to come as well.

i was hoping for an apt around the end of june
as for lincoln center, that is one place i have sent my resume. I have a BA in music, so the chamber music society may work well. as for when i would be there, my goal is from late june to around september, unless things go exceptionally well, then i'd stay longer. what is craig's list?

It's a bit late for internships as most of the paid ones were full already in April, and the ones that are unpaid are filling up if not already full. (I know because I had this issue trying to help out my sister in law last year)
apartments where you are looking are expensive, not impossible to find one but they won't be cheap at all. craigslist is my only suggestion, or the village voice.

Craig's List is a place where people can list all sorts of things. It is probably your best bet for finding an apartment without going through an agent or broker (which would be a real education regarding our cost of living). Cynthetiq had a good suggestion with the Village Voice. That's a free paper here in the city, and it has apartment listings. However, check it online, as the listings there are updated every day. I think this requires some small fee, but it is worth it. The print version only comes out once a week, and by then the online people have worked it over pretty well. That reminds me about something else that people from other cities aren't always used to... If you are serious about a place, you can't really think about it for too long. Apartments at good prices in the area you are talking about can be snatched up in one day.
I'll ask around with some of my friends about sublets for the summer. Late June is a little tough since most students are already gone, but I'll see what I can do. You may have to consider living in one of the other boroughs or upper Manhattan (above Harlem). That is what a lot of students end up doing. The commute to mid-town isn't so bad if you live near a subway stop that goes there. I don't mean to make it sound like what you want is unrealistic here - if you have your money in your hand and can act quickly, you should be able to find a place to live. One more thing about Lincoln Center - you do know that Lincoln Center consists of 13 different organizations, right? You could ask each one of them if they might need an intern or some sort of summer work. That would include (I can't remember the one): Lincoln Center, Inc. Jazz at Lincoln Center Metropolitan Opera NY City Opera NY City Ballet New York Philharmonic Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society Performing Arts Library School of American Ballet Juilliard School (212)799-5000 Vivian Beaumont Theater Walter Reade Theater You could also try: Carnegie Hall Merkin Hall Norton Symphony Space Manhattan School of Music New York Pops Orchestra Mostly Mozart Festival American Composer's Orchestra Orchestra of St. Luke's You should be able to find the phone numbers for these organizations on the internet pretty easily (I put Juilliard's number on here for you, since it is the only one I know off the top of my head). Cynthetiq might be right about it being too late, but you could always call them up and explain your situation. Someone may have some sort of job you could do, even if it was office work - that would be a foot in the door for next year. That is how I ended up with an internship at the American Chemistry Council a few years ago.

since you mention music, you should consider Brooklyn too. The Brooklyn Academy of Music is a good rival to Lincoln Center's operations. It's in downtown Brooklyn and housing in Brooklyn is much cheaper than Manhattan.
as far as speed in selecting something, yes you have to be fast, a day is sometimes all you get to ponder something and sometimes bidding wars erupt right in the hallway as people are looking at places. |

It's not your requested area, but... an area that I wouldn't overlook is the Fort Washington or Inwood sections of Upper Manhattan. It's damn near the end of the A line train which runs express. I lived there for a bunch of years, paid an unbeleivably low rent for a doorman building, river view, and a huge apartment. There were also tons of musicians in the area.

Thanks so much for all the info so far. I'll check heavily into craig's list.
and yeah, i know what you mean about apartments going up and being rented within a day. Part of the reason i am doing this is for a friend who is on 104th and ..wel darnit, she didn't tell me the cross street, but i think it's broadway or amsterdam. Part of the main reason for my going is to be in manhattan. I completely understand the cost of living there, and i understand, but like i said, it's only for a short time and i have enough extra cash to do it outright, but i would like to have some form of income while i am there. Now, i will say that i don't mind livnig in other areas of manhattan, as long as they aren't harlem or some of the seedier places. Fort washington or inwood sounds like something i'll look into. Upper west side is just the area i am most familiar with at the moment and it's near where my friend lives. Thanks for the info on the lincoln center. I have sent in for the mostly mozart festival, metro opera and ballet and perf arts library. I think i'll start at the top and give each one a call and explain the situation and see what they can do for me and I for them. Wow, you all have been so helpful, keep it coming
