Most people, when they apply for a job, sign on the job application, whether they read it or not, an Employment at Will agreement. meaning, either party can terminate the employment at any time. No notice given.

Unions cost you money to belong to, but people can still be fired even if they belong to a union, they just get fired for cause. You just need to "write a person up" three times, and they are out.
Telling the boss to go to hell, would be insubordination and you'd be out in many companies.
