Technically, it's not preposterous. Because of there not being a team in LA, they get a guarenteed game every week on TV. If they got a team, and LA fans acted like they have historically, they wouldn't necessarally even get any game due to the league blackout rules.
That's why the league hasn't pushed harder for a team, and why there wasn't much effort to quell the fighting among ownership groups when LA lost to Houston for the expansion team a few years back. They really want the second-biggest market in the country to always have games on, so they get that extra revenue.
