When I was a kid I used to slip into this old pool hall downtown, the kind where it was always dark and had neon beer signs on the window. They wouldn't normally let me play but I'd set up the racks for them and the players would toss me a nickel or dime.
Later, when I was in the Navy I started hanging out at all of the topless bars off base which sometimes had pool tables. This was a good place to learn both the physical and mental aspects of
pool.
Went thru this period of hanging out at the various billiard halls
as I lived in several cities. Eventually you come to a point that you realize you are not a natural (like the guys on ESPN). I was a good player but not to the level of a touring pro. Now I just mostly play on my home table for fun. Great stress relief.
I've had several cues over the years. Had a Mucci for 13 years untill it was stolen. Now my primary cue is a Predator with a 314 shaft. Also have a Joss and a J. Pechauer. They are beautiful cues but I seldom use them.
I still love pool but don't get competitive about it as when I was younger. The great thing about havng a home table is that you can get up at 2 am (or anytime) and practice without having to go to a club.
