Sounds to me like you tried to just install XP over your old OS (probably 98 or ME)... well, that will invariably lead to random problems.
First thing to try is a complete windows update! This means SP1 first, then get EVERY critical and recommended update. windowsupdate.microsoft.com Use it or lose it (your sanity, that is).
If that doesn't work, then I highly recommend backup up any files you need onto CD-R or on some other computer, then boot from the winxp cd and reinstall with a full wipe of the harddrive. Then run windows update again.
