Has anyone heard of this ReaL Media Player problem?
I had a ton of real media .rm and .ram files which I used to play, no problem. I used to have Real One Player 8 and W 98 SE.
I had to upgrade to XP, and also have installed Norton on my PC, and now Real Player wont play any of the movies - same files, same player... it can play music files (but falls over sometimes) but if I try to play any movie file it crashes out and generates the "send error report?" thing. So I dl'd Real Player 10, same problem... Basically the ONLY thing thats changed is I have XP and Norton now, has anyone else had a similar problem? What can I do? Are there other media players that will play .rm and .ram files? (Windows Media Player can play my MPEG's, but it doesnt support the Real Media files...)

![]() And listen to SiN about Real Alternative. I shoulda told you to uninstall RealShitty Player, and install Real Alternative. It's also on that same site. Real Player blows. I haven't had that pile of crap on my PC in a loooong time. |

Thanks for the advice, it didnt work, but I think it helped me see what the problem was. When I tried to install the other media player, it missed one file in the W32 folder, and I think that must be the problem.
Of course, now I cant install the player, and it wont let me uninstall it either because it says the files are protected - bah, I hate computers!!!

Only problem with Realalternative is that it wouldn't let me watch my Oakland A's streaming live broadcasts last year... and I didn't wanna install Windows Media player 9--that's possibly the only thing worse than Real. So, I had to use Real, but only for streaming files, and who the hell ever uses .rm files anyway?
Seriously. Anyone? |

Sounds to me like you tried to just install XP over your old OS (probably 98 or ME)... well, that will invariably lead to random problems.
First thing to try is a complete windows update! This means SP1 first, then get EVERY critical and recommended update. windowsupdate.microsoft.com Use it or lose it (your sanity, that is). If that doesn't work, then I highly recommend backup up any files you need onto CD-R or on some other computer, then boot from the winxp cd and reinstall with a full wipe of the harddrive. Then run windows update again. Just my 2 cents.
