I know that whenever I'm supposed to make something pop off the canvas/page/tree/whatever, I tend to darken the background (which you appear to have done in the second picture) and add the TINIEST bit of white.
Of course, my work is also very tattoo/cartoon style, so what I do may not be appropriate for other genres.
Regardless, your piece is very nice!
