There was another episode in which they listed several states which were east of spring field. One of those states was Oregon. Therefore, Springfield is probably in Alaska. This location would be ideal:

There are lots of towns in Alaska that no one, including arguably the townsfolk, has ever heard of. This would explain how Shelbyville can be next to Springfield.

Recall one episode. The Simpsons went to Florida because Homer went crazy. After they were banned, they showed a map of the states where they were banned from. The only one left was something in the midwest and Arizona. So it couldn't be Alaska.

Springfield is really just a metaphore for the world. Everything in it is different, just like the world. Things change, yet really don't change that much. It's a great idea by Groening.
