I'm watching too.

I was wondering about that, but then I always think of the episode where they take Burn's yacht out to party. Therefore Springfield has to have a seaport, and Ohio is landlocked.

I don't think this will ever be solved.

In an early episode, the Simpson family is sitting on a hill, under a tree, and Homer says something about this Northern Kentucky town. ALSO...and I don't remember who was in the conversation...somebody, on one of the episodes, mentioned "going south of the border," to which the reply was, "You mean Tennessee?" -Also references Kentucky.

There's a springfield in tons of states.
However, in the "Behind the Music" spoof episode, the narrator said, and I quote, ".. for this northern Kentucky family."

I'm fairly certain that the Simpsons don't live in a real state.
I recall in one episode, when lisa is living in that big tree to impress the environmentalist vegan guy she says something along the lines of "how the view is amazing from up here." The camera then pans to the scenery which includes the Eiffel Tower, the Goldengate bridge, and a few other landmarks from around the world. I don' think that's in any state.

Not to mention in one episode where Lisa said that West Springfield is TWICE the size of Texas.

while it is true that Ohio does not have a seaport, I dont think you could accurately call a state which has Lake Erie as its entire norther border landlocked.

That's actually what I thought when I first started watching the show... But really they live in a town which doesn't exsist. Its made up of anything and everything the animators want to put on the show

OK...the episode that I had in mind is on TV right now. It's the one where "Marge's Law" has sugar outlawed in Springfield. Apo, takes Homer to a meeting of individuals who are committed to bringing sugar back to Springfield. One member of the group tells Homer that they need someone willing to smuggle the sugar from south of the border. Homer replies, "You mean Tennassee?"

Whenever they mention an actual state name, they change it the next time that episode airs. I remember seeing the Behind the Music episode, where they said "for this Northern Kentucky family" then a few weeks later I saw a re-run and they said "for this Southern Tenessee family"

plus, Springfield Kentucky is not in the northern part of the state

There was another episode in which they listed several states which were east of spring field. One of those states was Oregon. Therefore, Springfield is probably in Alaska. This location would be ideal:

Every state mentioned in the episodes is to the east.

Every state is to the south (so tenessee is still south of the border)

There are lots of towns in Alaska that no one, including arguably the townsfolk, has ever heard of. This would explain how Shelbyville can be next to Springfield.

This would fit just about every possibility that I can recall except for the fact that they seem to have a normal day/night cycle

Recall one episode. The Simpsons went to Florida because Homer went crazy. After they were banned, they showed a map of the states where they were banned from. The only one left was something in the midwest and Arizona. So it couldn't be Alaska.

Springfield is really just a metaphore for the world. Everything in it is different, just like the world. Things change, yet really don't change that much. It's a great idea by Groening.

The Illinois argument is only because there are both a Springfield AND a Shelbyville in central Illinois. (though no Brockway, Ogdenville or North Haverbrook)

On the Behind the Laughter episode: If you catch it in reruns, the name of the state they claim to live in changes every time.

I think the point of Springfield is not to be in a state, but to be able to be any city in the US.

OK, yeah there is a Shelbyville near springfield, but there are quite a few differences.

I think that if it were an actual state that it could be Oregon, they seem to be able to get into their car and drive to the ocean in one day, and the very next day they can turn around and drive to the dessert, it's not too hot, and it does snow there.

But in actuallity it was meant to be just "another town" almost every state has a Springfield and the writer had to put down they lived in "such-insuch-town" or it wouldn't seem liable. Right?
