Well...I caught the sneak preview last night, and I've got to admit, I was wrong. It was a pretty good zombie flick. It took place in a mall, and had a black police officer, but that was about the only resemblance to the original.
There were a couple of interesting new characters introduced and the editing, cinematography and special effects were well used and visually very good..
This movie borrowed several elements from 28 Days Later. Not just the fast zombies. The slow zombies of the original would have improved this movie. They worked in 28 Days but not so much in this movie. Now that I think about it a bit more, the zombies in this film were really kind of pathetic compared to the originals. They lacked the "personality" of the slow zombies. Although there was a scene early on where the fast zomies did add a bit of humor to a scene.
There were a couple of disappointing lapses in common sense.
Good use of humor throughout.
Fans of the original should look for Tom Savini's cameo.
Left the movie very satisfied. It has a good "creep" factor in that we all were very jumpy when we left the theater, and it led to the inevitable "what would you do" discussions. Walking alone to my car at midnight, down an unlit suburban neighborhood street, scared the bejeezus out of me. Well, that and when I got home at 12:30 the lights were on in my home and the doors were unlocked. My wife seldom leaves the lights on and never, NEVER leaves the doors unlocked. She was sleeping on the couch. I was a little nervous about waking her because there was that dark part of my subconscious that new if I touched her, her dark eyes would pop open revealing nothing but cloudy white, she would hiss as she lunged at me with an open, bloody mouth.
I left her sleeping on the couch, locked the doors and left all the lights on when I went to bed.
