Give this a shot:
Before you start 3DSM, right-click your taskbar, and go to "Task Manager"
Start your 3DSM and play around for a few minutes, and then close it down.
Go to your system tray and double click on to the task manager icon, and go to processes, and find out which process is taking up the most processor usage and memory.
This may give you a cule as to what is using the memory or processor time.
