Oh man....what an idiot, showing off a loaded gun in a classroom. He could have wounded or killed someone other than himself. That being said, he made a great point of showing how easily a gun can go off. I give him credit for continuing the speech...what a tough guy.

now, that was a .40 caliber weapon...
if he had shot himself in the leg with a .45, that little 'presentation' would have been over right then ![]()

Does anyone know/think it was staged? Was there a blank in the gun? As a few have mentioned, it sure got the point across how easy it is for those guns to go off. Maybe it was deliberate?

That guy quite obviously didn't know what the fuck he was doing. He shouldn't have drawn his own sidearm, instead, he should have had a non-firing presentation handgun. What does he need a real gun for? Not like the kids would be able to tell. I still have to give him respect for being such a tough fucker, continuing on like that after he shot himself. But it goes to prove that many times brains are better than brawn.

I'd like to say that in all the years I've had cops come and talk to us they've used real working firearms in the demonstration. They were cops with the weapons they used everyday. There was only one time that they didn't have a working gun and the guy who was lecturing to us dealt with removing firing pins and disassembled and built guns for the department I guess for a living. I doubt it's out of the ordinary to have real guns with them.

Holy crap. Even though this guy completely screwed up, I'm sure everyone in that class will NEVER forget that presentation....

1. Always assume a gun is loaded. That means things like chamber checking - even if your buddy removed the magazine and showed you an empty chamber prior to handing it to you.... That also means it should be pointed in a safe direction - even when "empty." - Neither of which the poor fella did. 2. Keep your finger off the trigger until you intend to shoot. So even in a "low ready" stance the finger is OFF the trigger. 3. Don't cover (point) at anything you don't intend to shoot. e.g. dark areas... etc. 4. Always be aware of what's behind your target (backstop). I am impressed that he didn't start to pass out after getting shot - perhaps it wasn't his first time... |

Cops and Feds accidentally shoot themselves, civillians, and each other on a regular basis. Keepandbeararms.com has at least one story per week of a Negligent Discharge by one of the GovGoons. They're -NEVER- fired, just placed on "paid suspension" or some other name for what the rest of the world knows as "Paid Vacation."

What's even more frightening is this; the only thing they -do- seem to be able to consistantly hit is themselves!!
The nation-wide average, among all levels of Law Enforcement, for centre-of-mass hits on a full-size sillouette at 7 meters is a whopping 26%. LAPD is the high-scorer, at 74% ( as of last year ). Twenty-six percent. At 7 meters, with my .44, I shoot 95-100%. And I am hardly an exceptional shot. Cops just plain can't shoot. |

The Glock has the only safety any gun ever needs, and this jackhole obviously didn't have, safe gun-handling habits.
As to being surprised at him continuing the presentation, a few years ago, my Dad popped a .380 into his thigh on accident while in the car with my little brother. He took off his belt, wrapped around his thigh with my bro's shirt, and then calmly drove himself onto the local military base and to the hospital (Dad's a retired soldier). He goes into the emergency room and is chatting up one of the nurses when she finally asks him why he's there. My brother said that he'd never seen orderlies move so fast as when my Pop calmly told them that he'd shot himself in the leg. Suffice to say that he didn't feel like a smart firearms user that day, and also suffice to say that I've given him a lot of ribbing over the years because of this incident. Anyhoo, that video is something, and makes me wonder why my tax dollars go to support yahoos like this. Or, more to the point, why this scary gorilla was let out of the box to make a presentation when his hardcore bad-ass self should be doing quasi-legal druglab invasions in South America. Yay for the pointless waste of money and lives that si the war on drugs. |

I wouldn't be so hard on cops. There are knuckeheads in any field. Don't let this guy convince you that all of them are like this.
Perhaps the reason why this goof was lecturing a classroom was because their better officers were appropriately assigned to be in the field. I wouldn't call him a "bad-ass" - just a knucklehead who should know the rules of basic gun-safety. In all my years I had only one AD ("accidental discharge") of my weapon. That was when some lousy gunsmith botched the trigger-job and magazine disconnect of my BHP. I dropped the slide release and the hammer came forward with the slide! Naturally I had the gun pointed toward a safe spot on the ground (basic rule of safety) when the thing went BOOM! So, unlike that poor soul, I still have all my toes. |

I vote staged all the way, even down to the news report. If he really shot himself with a .40 there woulda been a whole lotta blood not to mention dust or something from the wall because for him to still be standing it would have had to be a soft tissue wound. A .40 would ripped right through his soft tissue and bounced off the wall. It's gotta be staged.

The weapon was pointed at the floor, and any spatter or cratering would have been off-camera. Also, bullet wounds don't produce the gout of blood you see on TV; unless it's a headshot, the blood just leaks out ( or sprays if you hit an artery ) just like a bad cut. Exceptions, obviously, are frangible and high-velocity rifle bullets. A good hollowpoint might not even have exited his leg, depending upon the angle at which he was shot.
This tape's authentic. DEA has been in an uproar ever since, threatening to sue the camera operator for allegedly compromising the agent's identity. |

Only open arterial bleeds can spray blood if at all. Frangible bullets aren't much different - I'd say a high powered rifle is probably a little more likely to leave an "open" channel prone to bleeding. |
