Is it illegal to own a 28 inch machete in the UK?
I was just... erm.. wondering about that.
I mean, I know wandering the streets with it would be illegal, but do you think it is illegal for a hypothetical person to own one? |
Amazing what you find when you start cleaning the place, eh?
|
I wouldn't be surprised if it was.

I suppose a machete is one method of cleaning - and he could also use it to threaten the bin men to come take away the bags...
--------- A quick google wasn't overly helpful with an answer- -they are illegal in Australia... but quickest I could find: http://www.adindex.co.uk/shopping/penknifeshop/info.htm Quote:

Is it legal to own anything? Doesn't the royal family own it all? *poke* *poke*
Just kidding I have no idea. The regulations vary from place to place. Call your local police and for the love of god DON'T TELL THEM YOU HAVE IT. Make sure it stays well hidden for a few days after you call. |
It's my understanding that any fixed-blade object with a blade over 20 centimeters is considered an "Offensive Weapon" by HMG, and any double-edged weapon of any length also falls into this catagory. In a typical show of HMG's hopolophobic insanity, Police have now begun confiscating folding pocketknives at "Stop and search" stops.

For ownership there aren't any laws, the only laws preventing bladed items cover flick and butterfly knives, but there aren't any against length of blade.
Incidently, I live in Norwich :) |

:) And that was kinda what I thought too, it would be illegal to carry it in public, but not to own it. |
Ah cool, I'm not a football fan, so I'm afraid I can't comment, but I live just off Colney Lane - you literally were just up the road from me! :D

Are you a football hooligan?? :D |
crazy story, my grandma was cleaning house one day when my dad was young (this was on a navy base, they had been there a few months) and she pulled out all the doors in the kitchen to rearrange everything, when she went to put one back she felt something on bottom, she fliped it upside down and there was a BLOODY MEAT CLEAVER NAILED to the underside..... she freaked out, threw it out and made my grampa transfer to a diff base

When I lived in the Caribbean where every other person walks around with a machete, I decided to purchase one of these all-purpose tools for myself. The common brand was ironically stamped as manufactured in Birmingham, England.
