Look at Savage, you may find a nice centerfire in your price range. They are also hard to beat for accuracy.

And 100 yards is stretching pretty far for a rimfire.

A 22 Mag can shoot 100 yard with no problem I have a mossberg chuckster and have killed many groundhogs, quite a few at 100.

It looses killing power at about 150yards and its accuracy is not good enough to attempt past 100.

I personally do not like Savage guns, If your gonna buy a gun, then do it right. Remington/Winchester/Weatherby/Shylin have been doing it right for over 100 years. Looking at the accuracy tables of last years markmanship tournament, Weatherby and Shylin are probably the 2 most accurate barrels you can get. 80% of your accuracy will come from your barrel.

Winchester/Remingtons were also in some of the top ranked guns.

Anyway, I suggest looking at remingtons new .204. 40gr. bullets with a mid powder charge.

In all honesty Smackre, My true advice, is to save up your cash a little bit longer, and spend the 500 bucks for the gun that YOU want, not the one you can afford. Put a scope on it accordingly Luepold or Berz.

Guns are oen of the few things that very very few people will not take care of. Remember, theres a good chance your gonna give it to your kid someday if he is interested in such a thing.

I promise you will not be disappointed in your dicision.

(Edit) Back again, I know that most people who whistledog hunt also hunt larger game, whitetails, maybe bear. Most states have lowest required caliber of a whitetail gun at .270 Off hand I think WV is .243

When choosing a gun think about if you'll be taking it to Whitetail hunt, moose hunt, elk hunt, boar hunt, in your state, or out of state also.

It could save you money someday if you don't have a gun to do something like those things and you have a dual purpose gun.

.22 mag ammo is overpriced. Make sure that you look into a .223 and compare.

A .22 rimfire will do the trick after you learn it well. I suggest a 10-22 by ruger.

.223 good advice that I left out of my post. Very cheap military ammo if you don't want to reload it yourself. It's ballistics are so close to that of the .222 that you can't really go wrong with it.

Ohh and Winchester .22 Mag ammo that I use in my Mossberg Chuckster is only 9 bucks for 50 shots.

Boo,

a 22lr for woodchuck at 100 yards isn't enough. I used to shoot them at under 100 yards with my 22 couldn't believe I was that bad of a shot, then I started finding dead woodchucks in different areas. I got talking to someone who knows guns and hunting better than I and he agreed that I was probably just wounding them and not even killing them. The winchester 22 mag I went to would stop them dead. If I were buying a varmint rifle right now I would check into the 17hmr. I have no experience with them but I would see what I could find out.

17hmr loses alot of power just like the 22lr does. My uncle has one and he shot upwards of 10 ground hogs and only stopped 2 in their tracks.

its not a 100+ yard gun IMO

Go for the really expensive ammo. 22 Hornet.

If I were you, I would go for something in .223. You might be able to find an used Savage 24F-20. It is a crack in half over under single shot rifle shotgun combo. I have a 22lr 410 combo made way back when (59 I think) and it is a great gun. Plus, the shotgun can be used for the close ones.

I have to second the vote for a Savage. The name might not carry quite the image some of the others do but for the money they are great guns. True, I would rather have a Weatherby but they are usually AT LEAST double the price.

All I'm gonna say is this is something you'll have your entire life, chances are your gonna hand this down to your own kid someday.

People take care of guns(most people that know anything about guns anyway)

So get what you want not what you can afford. Maybe that means you gotta save up an extra month. You'll find that you'll be much much happier when you do finally get your weapon.

Ok BoomTruck.

Not to say that Savage makes junk guns. Because I'm sure they shoot ok and are good hunting rifles, truck through the woods with em and stuff. But they are a cheaper gun. Most of em don't look nearly as nice as the Remingtons.

Remington has several patents on their action and bolt, which is a crucial part of accuracy.

Savage is heading in the right direction though, with this new Accu Trigger they are putting into their guns, they will have quite awhile to go if they want to compete in the big 4 competitors of good guns.

Remington/Winchester/Wetherby/Shylin

no one has mentioned this, so I will, my personal favorite is the Mosin Nagant M44, there under $100 brand spankin new (70 years old, but never fired, all matching parts, got mine on gunbroker.com) There accurate as heck, I buy the surplus ammo at shows for cheep, and they are really really easy to modify, I'm gettin mine drilled and tapped for a scope in a few weeks, and I cut the end off of it to remove the bayonette. it's a good solid gun with few moving parts, so you can never jam or go wrong with this one.

Just a thought

If left alone they can eat about an entire field of soybeans, The most I've seen is an entire 2 acre field completely destroyed because the guy who owned it was too much of a stubburn ass to let people hunt it. Too bad for him lost his entire crop.

It's also a big sport between the fellas I hunt with, one of them who is a very very avid hunter is up to about 130 hogs this year, I'm up to 45 and the other guy is at about 40 or so.

You will need more cartridge than a rim fire to make one-shot kills on a ground hog at any distance. I am a prairie dog and rock chuck (western version of a wood chuck) hunter. I found that if loaded with hollow points a .22 Hornet is good out to 150 yds, .222/.223 Rem is good out to 300 yds and the .22-250 Savage Ackley Improved is good to 500/600 yds. Find a .222 Rem or a .223 Rem. and learn to handload for it. If you buy used, find a Remington or a Winchester bolt-action rifle. If you buy new, Savage is really trying hard to sell a very accurate rifle for minimum bucks. Savage's new factory adjustable trigger is very nice.

Back to the .22 Hornet cartridge. Hardly any factory .22 Hornet barrels are super accurate. Only by custom rebarreling can one get tack driver accuracy in a Hornet. There are exceptions of course. I rebarreled my Ruger .22Hornet with a Shilen barrel and am very happy. I liked it so much that I built another identical rifle in .22 Hornet Ackley Improved. It is deadly out to 200 yds in windy conditions and to 250 yds in no wind on prairie dogs.
