Fantasy Warrior
I read alot of fantasy novels. The warriors in the novels would usually specialise in a certain weapon and then go adventuring fighting bad guys and monsters with it. Same thing can be seen in the old martial arts movies where everyone carried around a weapon of somesort because they never knew when they were getting into a fight.
My question is this: Imagine you were in such a fantasy setting, what weapon would be your specialised weapon and why? The question includes what type of armour or shiled you would weild. My self I am torn between several: I like the spear. It can be wielded just like a staff with the added bonus of being able to pierce for critical damage. I do think it is multipurpous (can be used in a brawl or in a duel). The problem is its length can be a problem if required to fight indoors. I also like the katana. I think it is probably the best well rounded sword to wield. Its light enough to be used fast with grace but sharp and strong enough to do good damage and be able to defend against heavy weapons. The problem is I fight with cunning and a single weapon limits my available manouvers. I would probably go for twon short swords with a slight curve (like long wakizashis). That way I could have access to advanced combos in order to utilise my cunning. Its fast which is my best attribute. I would use them in lightning fast combos of stabbing attacks with sporadic slashing attacks. The problem is with a shorter range it might be bhard to get in to attack when fighting people weilding longer weapons. Same thing when fighting against people weilding heavy weapons. Unless Im fast enough to make sure Im not in the way of their hits everytime my swords would be heavy enough to effectivle defend agaist the heavier weapons. Using the same advantages and inline with my thai boxing training I would also consider using claws with a custom made armour. By claws I mean the type you see on Wolverine (Xmen). I would have light weight shin guards with blades running up the front with a short spike protruding from each knee. I would also have light weight bracers with a short elbow spike on it. These armours arent aimed at defending by taking blows but by using skill to deflect and then attack using the 8 avaliable weapons. This has the same detriments as the twin sword style. I would never use a shield or use heavy armour as it doesnt suit me or my style of fighting. The last two would probably be my way to go. Since we have quite a few martial artists here with experience in various weapons. I would like everyone to do as I have done and invent our imaginary fantasy world by stating your place in it. Explain the reasons for your choice of weapons and armour. |

2 daggers, maybe tanto style, so I could use the back side of the blade to trap and lock when I don't want to cut someone. Would be devastatingly fast, provided I was fast enough myself to get into close range with any opponent, especially those using longer weapons, like swords and spears. A bandoleer of throwing knives wouldn't hurt as well. Well, technically, they would hurt....

a good cut and thrust bastard sword- and a curved short sword with a heavy blade- and a good solid club or mace for the stuff that would fuck up the edge on my swords (fantasy books so often forget the nasty stuff that you would'nt want to hit with a blade) finally, I agree with the spear idea- the reach is nice, and it takes no side to side space to use- the best thing to keep em back
definately would want bracers- you get hit on lower arms a whole lot- and greaves, cause legs get hit too- and some brigandine or a coat of plates for the torso- and a light metal helmet - for a shield I'd take a metal buckler about 12" in diameter, with a spike

i'd wear nothing but leather armor; frankly, i wouldn't need it, 'cause in a fantasy world i'd be far too fast to hit. i'd utilize the dual short swords (a la all my D&D characters) and swiftly deal death like no other. oh man, it would be badass.
if we want honesty, though, i would agree with fire on almost every point, except for the spear. sure, i don't deny that the spear is an awesome weapon, just not really my style.

Hm. As for my training, I would have to echo just about everyone, and say two short swords of some type, slightly curved. I would prefer slightly heavier than wakizashi style, but something along those lines. Light-medium armor, not meant to take any serious blows, but to help deflect for when I'm just a mite too slow.
If I look at my ACTUAL fighting style, I would have to say some sort of a badass mace. Heavy enough to knock someone over, with a spattering of very sharp spikes on it. You know, to go with the whole badass theme. When I fight, I step in, hit once, and leave - job's finished. And I think a mace fits that description nicely. And light chain mail, so I could step in fast enough to deal the damage, but it would still bear the brunt of their death throes. Of course, if we're talking fantasy, it's totally different. I would be about 10 feet tall and carry the biggest fucking battleax you've ever seen. And I wouldn't need any armor, because nothing could pierce my Ultra Skin of Defense [+4... million]. I imagine I would look much like Bill Murray playing golf in Cadddyshack. Picture the flowers, only those are my enemies. "Oh it's in the hole!" Heh. |

I think I'd use a Katana as my primary weapon.
However, in a sideboard of sorts, I'd have some sort of pistol. Maybe the pistols from Equilibrium, those were badass. I think guns should count because you see them in all sorts of Anime, fantasy novels, and video games. Still, primary weapon, definitely the katana. If I can't use a gun... twin Kodachis

Oh, if we're allowed to change our apearances, I would make my self a very large man, solid muscle. Kinda like Terry Tate. I would also weild a battle axe.
But since I'm more pleased with being the tiny 127 lbs I am, I would definitely wield a Katana. Possibly the most badass of weapons in my opinion. Made over 1200 years ago... still the lightest, hardest, strongest blades ever made (using the old style, that is).

I would use things that are practical, yet effective. I was always a fan of Japanese swords, so I would probably walk around with a katana strapped to my side or twin kodachis. As for armor, I would wear something that I would be able to move around well in while being protected. Samurai armor has been known to provide excellent mobility, but does lack in the protection department.

I thought long and hard, I would use a battle axe, a flail, a trident or a katana. I cant make up my mind. For armor I would have some sort of forearm and lower leg protection and I would wear a flak jacket and baggy camoflauge pants with all the pockets full of throwing knives and stars.

Light armor, I'm a small guy so I need speed on my side. I designed a set of leather armor for myself when I got bored in class one day. Light but durable. Reinforced steel on the arm bracers, a harden leather chest curass with kindey protection, no helm (ease of movement and extended line of sight), leather leg bracers. I'd carry a Jo staff (lighter and shorter than the Bo staff, but just as affective) and two roman style short swords (20 in blades and little to no hilt) with a small buckler straped on my left arm.
One of the characters off of Kenshin: Wandering Samurai (anime) had one the best ideas. Useing a light blade to defend against weapon attacks and using kenpo to attack with fists and feet. Knock their blade away and give them a roundhouse kick to the head. Very Nice. That would require extensive traning in Kendo and Kenpo to pull it off exfectly, but then we are talking fantasy here. Also, throwing knifes, badass. |

Fantasy? G36 style assault rifle with silencer, IR and red dot laser, 4-10x scope, and picatinny rail on the bottom for a host of gadgets and weapons. Also a SOCOM pistol, silencer and IR/red dot laser included. Light yet bullet and sword resistant armor, retinal implants for IR/night vision while keeping full situational awareness.

naginata style katana? sorry, but that's like saying a 'Honda Accord style pickup truck' A naginata is a completely different weapon. It is a staff weapon with a curved blade at the end. It is also looked at as a "womans" weapon in Japan...

most people think of slashing/stabning weapons when fantasy is mentioned. But me, i love the crushing power of a heavy mace. shure its slow but they will breakbones through armor. mace and a full sheild. mabey tote around a big long bow for reaching out and touching people. |

Hrm. Okay, serious (?) discussion about DnD-esque warfare?
I'd take a 2-handed morningstar with an animated tower shield. The morningstar is both spiky and blunt, allowing you to pierce fullplate and bash undead with equal ease. The animated tower shield provides significant cover, but leaves your hands free for the pure nastiness that using a two-handed weapon permits.

Personally I would want to have a sword like Gats from the Berserk anime series. It's about a 5 ft long and 1/2 to a one ft wide sword, that he trained with his whole life, thus being able to wield it like it was a regular sword. It's nothing for him to use it where it would be hell for anyone else. Something insane like that would be very exciting to me. Personally I would train with something even heavier increasing my strength till I was at the point that I could wield the other sword with little effort. But that's just me, in a fantasy world.

Two bladed sword like darth mauls lightsaber. Light armor so i could move quick and it wouldnt hamper my movement at all. Obviously i wouldnt use a shield.
Or i would also like a scimitar and a dagger style still with light armor though.

Armor:
1) Backward-serrated Bracers (made up of several straight iron rods, with leather and cloth padding under it.) 2) Small-loop chain gloves. Weapons: 1) Hooked net 2) Hand-crossbow 3) ~6 inch stiletto Tactics: Net my opponent and shoot with the crossbow. If he is wearing enough armor to keep the bolts from penetrating, close in and finish off with the stiletto. |

I'm a bigger guy, and I can take punishment, so I'd go with some tough chainmail or heavy armor, and a huge ass claymore. If they got in too close, my gloves would have spikes on the knuckles . Seems like most people here are going speed and agility, I prefer power and strength.

I'd want a pickaxe... a few weeks ago I was helping a friend with a huge home renevation project, and as soon as I laid hands on a pick, I realized how natural it felt in my hands, how easily I could direct it.. (when nobody was looking, I did a little "Star Wars Kid" style practice with it )

With my fascination with all things Japanese, I'd have to go with the full daisho: katana & wakizashi. I'm ambidextrious, so dual-wielding has never been a problem. In fact, I've been practicing swordplay with friends using boffer weapons of late, and it seems that dual-wielding compliments my speed and flexibility.
I'd also likely carry a longbow of some sort as a ranged attack option. After all, if you can pick off half you combatants at range, you have only half as much to deal with when your swords come out to play.

heavy armor- giant warhammer: just for the bashing and length advantage. no shield or short fast weapon should stand up.

hum i would have to say some brigandine chest armor some metal greeves and a mix of chain mail and reinforced leather for the rest i would use a metal shield thats been polished to almost mirror like so i could reflect alot of light in the face of whatever im fighting not too big of a shield something still easy enough to carry around. for a weapon a fairly heavy spiked mace or war hammer but the spikes wouldnt be long enough to really go too deep dont want them to get stuck in whatever i hit too easy. i would try to keep the blades covered with some sort of poison but still count on the crushing force of the mace to do the damage. that and a big red plastic wiffle bat cause those things sting to get hit with =)
