Tazer Guns for the General Public?

Just ran across this website for Tazer Guns for the general public. Not sure as to what makes these safe for Joe Q Public vs. the units the Police have had access to over the years.

http://www.taser.com/taserstore/cati...&ResPerPage=10

We have a kid in the house and the wife has put her foot down as far as guns go. They have to be locked and in a safe, which doesn't make them very accessable in times of need!

Anyone have any experience with these units? Anyone ever been hit with one?

"Air tazers" or tazer guns have been available about as long as the original tazers were.

springs shoot out pointie prongs that go into the skin and then high voltage current is applied through the wires connected to the prongs.

Wow those are pretty expensive... but they're about the same price as a gun, so if you're planning on getting one for home protection, go for it. But what's to say that your kid doesn't get into a tazer either? That's why I like keypad safes.

the thing is, if you kid gets the tazer, he won't kill anyone. Also, If you need it, it can immobilize a person for a short time, but you had better be ready to knock them out as soon as there down, or they will just get right back up and either beat or shoot you. The other drawback is that they don't have a second shot, it's hit or miss, and a miss could = death for you...

I'm 6'8" and 300lbs, and I can stand for 3 seconds before collapsing, if you want a benchmark. Hurts like a bitch and leaves a cool burn mark if the guy firing it doesn't take his finger off the button. If someone isn't bracing for it, he's on the ground. It even works through leather and thick fabric. I think that's all you have to know.

Oh yeah, don't aim for the face if you don't wnat to get sued. those things can take out an eye.

I wanted something I can keep in a drawer for fast response. If the kid finds it and shoots himself.. Well let's just say that he should only do that once!
The backup for these is that it turns into a stun gun once shot. YOu just press the barrel against the person and it shocks the crap outta them again.
My 12ga. is in a safe, I just want something I can leave out and not worry about my kid finding. But rest assured, by the time the shock wears off 12ga. should deter any further agression!

I have tried many stun guns/ tazers (not the shootie version)- and do not like any of them-
I am 5'11 and about 200 lbs, and have tested several, from 40000 volts to 200000, (my wife works nights in a drug rehab center, so it seemed like a possible good idea for her to us) and have never been incapacitated by any of them- they hurt, they annoy, but then you beat the shit out of the user- have several cop buddies, all of whom detest tazers and stun guns- they tell me, though I have not checked the stats myself, that the law enforcement models, (far stronger than civilian ones) have less than a 30 % effectiveness rate- also, remember that that 3 seconds mentioned above is a hell of a long time in real life, and the subject will either be moving toward you with intent to harm, or thrashing around and disconnecting the prods- REALY, FROM EVERY PROFESSIONAL THAT I HAVE SPOKEN WITH, THESE ARE IMPRESSIVE LOOKING TOYS THAT DO NOT WORK- they do look VERY scary, and that makes them great for many bouncers that i know, and for anyone that you may need to intimidate into leaving you alone, what pisses me off about them is that they are empty threats, and leave the user up a creek if dealing with a serious bad guy....

mace or pepper spray, in my experience , is a far better idea for a fast grab defence- still no match for the gun, but at least it works more often ( though that one is not sure fire either).

Better by far to teach the kid proper respect for guns and not be killed by an intruder- I and many like me grew up with guns, all were loaded, with rounds in the chamber, and neither myself nor my sibling managed to shoot ourselves or anyone else-

Get a fast access handgun safe....you can get into them almost instantly....they don't use tradional lock systems, instead, you press series of buttons with your fingertips, and it only takes about 1-2 seconds to open.

Also, I would much rather have a baseball bat than a tazer, the police use them because they have a responsibility to do as little damage as necesssary.

Adding to the "not worth it" voices, I would much rather trust my bedside sword to defend against an attacker than a tazer. I accidentally stabbed myself in the finger while sharpening the tip, and it was a lot worse than the tazer, and it didn't leave the cool-looking burn. I know which I would be more afraid of.

On the news they always show the guy "testing out the new home town's tazer guns that the police officers have." He is always in a gymnasium and walking towards a thing of pads and the guy comes up and hits him in the back and he's like AHHHHHHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAARRRRRRRGHHHHHHHHHH and falls down and then he's like "it's not too bad."
