I just shot a Squirrel

Well at our house we have these squirrels and they toy with our two dogs causing them to bark constantly, day and night, we tried what we could to get them to stop barking, but eventually the squirrel had it coming. Well I pulled my BB gun out of the shed and popped the squirrel. Well it fell and now our golden retriever is going to town eating it.
I guess my question is, should i feel bad?

I don't feel it's my place to tell you if you should feel bad or not, as that is a matter of personal ethics, etc. I have shot dozens of squirrels and ground squirrels. The only time I feel bad about it is when I do not make a clean shot. I figure if I make the choice to take something's life, I can at least do it without causing the animal to suffer. For this reason I try to make head shots whenever possible.

I realize that's more of a personal perspective than an answer, but I hope it was helpful.

eh.

I will kill vermin like squirrels only if there isn't an alternative.

I don't know your situation personally, so I won't pass a judgement either way.

I personally hate squirrels. They chewed a hole in the roof of my shed and made it their home. They also like to chew up stuff around my property. Last summer, one chewed through the screen on our window, got in the house, realized we had animals and hid behind the entertainment center for 3 days, chewing all wires and crapping everywhere. We used a Have-a-heart trap to get it out of there, but I swear, if I see another squirrel near my house again, it's gonna get shot. Grrrrr

Why not shoot the dogs? That'd stop the barking.

Would you feel bad about killing rats? Same family. If the squirrel was a pest I don't think you did anything immoral in providing food for the Retriever.

my dog doesn't bark at the squirrels, and I didn't have to kill them to get her to stop. I bought a collar that shocks the shit out of her when she makes a peep. They aren't expensive, and she's much less rowdy now that she can't bark. I only left the collar on for a week, and she hasn't barked unnecessarily ever since

squirrels, annoying little birds, I say shoot em if they're on your property and you don't want em there, hell, shoot enough and let your dog munch on em and you saved your self some dough for dog food. As with local laws of course.

HELL YEAH, SCOOTER! HELL YEAH! Way to protect the freedoms of the U.S. of A. by taking out that commie pinko fag squirrell.

I used to kill all kinds of rodents and pigeons as a kid, my neighbors back yard was like a mini holocaust. Because that's where I threw all the dead bodies.

My mom finally gave my BB gun back a few months ago.

Nah, don't feel bad...there's plenty more where that came from. I usually try to shoot 'em with hollow tip 22. That usually turns them inside out.

As a child, I was a very cold blooded killer of anything that moved. Today, I am still a killer, but prefer a non lethal route only so I can shoot it again in the next few days.

Anyways, dont feel bad, I've done far worse.

That is probably not the best reasoning for killing squirrels. I can think of at least one other species that is not dwindling in numbers.

If I felt bad for every squirel/tweet bird/ crow/ chipmunk/goose/duck/groundhog/fox/coyote/pigeon/turkey/coon and generally any other animal I've had a gun and seen.

Hmm I'd probably kill myself with guilt if I felt it for all those.

heh, I havent seen this in a while. My city just passed an ordinance to allow anyone to shoot greckels (sp? ) apparently we have a big problem with an overpopulation of them. So basically it is encouraged for you to take care of these birds with air-rifles, blow-guns, bows and other primative weapons. We've had some fun so far.

Squirrels are fine in the woods, but around houses they can really tear things up and be a general pain. Better off without the hassle of his existence. Now you can do the same with his 300 buddies...

This was their land before it was our land.

I say if the squirrel is there, you should move, not them. You remind me of all those jerks that shot NATIVE Americans just for being there.

P.S. I'm totally kidding. Kill the little fockers.

Bingo. I just came back to this thread after my like six month old post that some didnt like That is my reasoning right there--our house had woods all around it, and the squirrels chewed into the attic, through any exposed wires, and necessitated very expensive repairs more than once.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a nature lover and all that crap. But to attempt to feed 23 squirrels gets real expensive real fast, not to mention the damage 23 squirrels can do to your bird feeders, they are real destructive little SOB's. To make a long story short they had to be eliminated. My wife took a sick day off work here while back and set on the front porch {it was to cold inside with the A/c on, go figure...} with tea, smokes and a .22 and commenced to thinning them out. I got home from work and there was a empty bug zapper box half full of the little buggers. Now we have only three or four, it's much easier to handle the bird/squirrrel food expenses and a lot less damage to the existing feeding hardware. Gawd, I love my wife, just remind me to never piss her off when she's got a gun in her hand, she's a crack shot ...
