Rem 870 shotgun barrel question
I bought the Remington 870 Express Combo which comes with a smooth bore bird barrel and a rifled slug barrel. Now here's my question.... I've heard mixed things about shooting regular slugs through a rifled barrel. Some people tell me it's ok, and others say no way and to ONLY use sabots. When I checked the manual to the gun, it didn't mention anything at all. Anyone have an opinion? I'd love to go out and practice more often, but at $10 for a box of 5 shots, that can get damn expensive. Hell, for $10 worth of ammo, I could shoot a .22 rifle all weekend

Why shoot slugs anyways (unless you are going for deer)? If you want to play around, go get some cheap #8 birdshot and go skeet shooting, or shoot some cans
Basically, for playing around, slugs arent what you want to be shooting. If you are practicing specifically for deer hunting, then yeah, I dont think you really have a choice--but otherwise, why?

I would suggest you use sabots in the rifled barrel. Thats what they are designed for. The older design slug with the grooves along its sides are made for smooth barrels.
Not sure what problems they would cause shooting them in the rifled barrel. One thing I can think of is leading up the barrel. Have you shot alot of slugs before? I know I can only stan shooting a couple boxs of 3" mag sabot slugs. |

Yeah I have about 4 boxes of sabots left that I'll end up shooting.
This summer, I put about 80+ #7 birdshot rounds thru my shotgun in about 2 hours and was fine the next day. About a week later, i shot off 2 boxes of sabots and my arm was killing me all week.

I own a 20 gauge youth model 870 (yes yes i'm 20 and I still shoot a youth model) but I own both barrels....When I use rifled slugs in my rifled barrel the grouping of shots are usually about 3+ feet apart...when I shoot sabots I can get a grouping of less than a foot.....Rifled slugs are meant for smooth non choke barrels...even though i've seen people shoot them out of barrels with chokes (yikes).........
