Who would you smack?
Who would you smack for taking extreamly poor care of a firearm.
Would it be the guy who was to cheep to go buy gun oil so dumped vegetable oil in his shotgun then complained because it was all sticky and hard to operate after leaving it sit for several months. Then instead of getting a good cleaner for it, decided to use lighter fluid to try and clean it up. Would it be the guy who bought 3 SKS's and didn't clean the cosmalene (sp) out of the barrel before shooting them. "The bullets will just push it out the barrel". Then complains because they are all gummed up and don't work well. Would it be the guy who wraps up guns in a blanket and puts them in the closet for about 20 years without any attention. Then when you take them out of the closet, the blanket is stuck to the gun. Would it be the guy who sticks a M1 Carbine behind the seat of his truck and never takes it out. Then when someone offers to clean it up and get it back into working condition he tells them, "wipe all the oil off when you're done because I'm just going to put it back in the truck". BTW this is an extend cab truck and the extend cab is so full of shit no one can ride back there. Or would it be someone you know who has treated their firearms poorly. Share your stories. |

Anyone who doesn't teach their kids about firearm safety and has guns in the house.
Anyone who has young kids and doesn't keep their guns and their ammo in separate places that the kids can't get to (like a safe.) Anyone like those two examples who gives responsible owners a bad image through negligence. |

I would smack one of my friends parents.
Two of my friends were rummagin around in their parents attic when they found an original WWII Lugar with all matching serial numbers, the nazi party marks and I think it also had a lanyard ring or something that made t considerably more sought after. Apparently, after bringing it back from the war, his grandad had bought a box of ammuniition (which we found with the gun), fired a magazines worth of ammo, and then put the gun and the ammunition up in the attic where they stayed for more than fifty years....uncleaned. It cleaned up surprisingly well, the barrel was a little pitted and there was some surface rust, but that was the only real damage. If he had taken care of that pistol it would have been worth a small fortune, but as it was, my friend was able to buy it from the family for I think it was 150 dollars.

Buddy of mine buys the world's ugliest 1911a1 for about $300. I look it over and see Series 70 Nat'l Gold Cup slide, WWII vintage Essex frame in plum brown (horribly checkered, actively hideous), old Videcki long trigger, hand-fitted barrel-bushing, some custom hammer with the prettiest sear engagement surfaces I've ever seen, and a host of other nice (if ugly) mods. It shoots like a damned dream. X-ring on every stinking shot and nary a misfire.
He goes into the Army, and leaves the pistol in the trunk of his car. His 65 Mustang, with it's very leaky trunk that is. For fifteen months. When he comes back, he's bitching to me because he can't open the zipper on the sheepskin he stored it in. I see it and realize what happened. The brass zippered is scaled shut. You don't want to know what that gun looked like when I got it open and sheared all that synthetic sheepskin off of it. To my own credit, I did get it back in working condition, and it shoots. It shoots about a third as well as it used to though. Frikken shame. |

I traded a guy an old .410 break for a semi .22LR that always jammed on him. I took it apart and cleaned all the TRANSMISSION OIL off it and it worked like a charm!
I knew a guy who tried to mount a dovetailed scope mount on his rifle by using a grinder and dremel tool to mill it. I saw a guy ruin a perfectly good 30-30 by drilling lots of holes in the end of the barrel because he though it would suppress the flash and lower the recoil. All it did was give him zero accuracy past 50 feet. Worst one would have to be the guy that bought a G-43, threw away the stock, mounted it on a carbon stock and milled it to take a huge scope and had it re-blued to a dull green and grey finish. Why not just buy a brand new Semi-Rifle instead of ruining an irreplaceable collectable! |

The guy my grandfather got a pump 30-06 from who kept it on his boat to kill sharks with that he caught while fishing. A hurrican came along and sunk the old mans boat and the next day he fished the gun out of the bay and took it apart to clean it. He did not know how to put it back together so he gave it to my grandfather. My grandfather could not figure out how to assemble it either so it put it in the attic in a box. A few years ago we found it and it took me about 45 mins to put it back together and it shoots like it was new.

The kids at my school that give me shit/trouble for my association with guns. Especially when they call me "the next columbine" which most likely stems from their shallow views towards guns based off of tv/movies (Bowling for Columbine comes to my mind). Around my community, it seems hard for people to understand that you can be a law abiding citizen, like guns, and not be a threat to the community.
