No photoshop.

I don't have the link, but I saw this on another board and followed the link to the source. That pic is off one of our carriers during a flyby.

I wonder how many days the pilot was grounded for that maneuver. It must be against some Navy regulation.

None.

It was a planned event.

One of the guys standing there is some big wig they were showing off for.

Sorry I can't remember more.

the pic is an optical illusion of sorts. the plane is NOT flying over the carrier, but rather off to the side. since there are almost no depth of field cues, it looks like the plane is within 20 feet of the men on the deck, whereas it is probably 100 feet (or more) further away. were it as close as it seems, it would dwarf those men even more than it does. notice how small the cockpit is compared to the size of the men. that gives you an estimation of how much further away it is from the camera.

cool pic, btw.

Don't they use the same effect in movies where the star is walking towards the camera when the house or whatever blows up at what appears to be 10 feet behind them? I think it would be some kind of telephoto lense.

I don't know a single pilot bone-headed enough to do this. It has to be chopped.

I wouldn't say it's a hundred feet away. If it were then it would be the size of a corperate or personal jet and f-14s are smaller than that. I say it's closer to 10 - 15 yrds away. Those guys are pretty close the edge of that carrier. If that plane was within 10 - 20 feet they could some hearing issues, cuz I see no ear protection on any of them, or get pulled in the air foil. Plus if the pilot had to bail from that manuver the wing would hit the side of the carrier if it were that close.

F-14's are much larger than personal jets. The F18 Super Hornet is a little smaller than than the -14. Just thought I'd throw that out for clarification.

I didn't realize personal jets were under 70'. But here are the dimensions of an F-14:

that also has to be one hell of a nice camera the plane traveling at the speed needed to do that.

as I was in the Navy, and worked on the Tomcat. the picture is real or chopped to portray a real event. Yes the plane is not as close to the carrier as it looks, the tomcat loves to play optical illusions in flight. I have wittnessed events such as this and the super sonic flybys. The jet is maybe 100 yds away frm the carrier at the least. and the camera angle makes the jet look to be lower than it is. It is still an awesome picture though.

Excellent link, Nash. Thanks for the explanation. I didn't believe it until I read the pilot's description of the maneuver.

There is one of a F-18 here in Alaska during the an air show about 10-14 mph below the sound barrier, matter in fact, you can hear the sound in the video following the airplane, about 2-3 seconds later.

http://www.mrx7.com/broke7/Movies/soundbarrier.WMV

I just remember there was a few broken windows. The 2nd day of the show, that pass was significantly slower. I watched it both days.
