I'm taking my guns to school!
That's right, I'm taking a pistol and a revolver to school with me on Oct. 6.
I have to do an informative speech for my speech class. My topic: Firearm Safety. I will be using a powerpoint presentation, a pistol, and a revolver in my demonstration. I did have to jump through some hoops to do it though, but it wasn't to bad. I had to write a letter requesting permission and get my instructor to sign it. Then I had to take it to the President of the University and have him sign it. Next, I had to get some copies made and give one copy to the campus police department and another copy to my instructor. I got really fast approval from the President as well...same day as when I turned in my request. I think I had some things going for me though. I'm a certified NRA safety instructor. I wrote a request that looked and sounded professional detailing date, time, and location of my class as well as what I would be using them for. Also stated there would be no ammunition and they would go from car to class to car. Also, the president used to be a Director for the Highway Patrol so he has a vested interest in firearm safety. This is going to be fun. I'll have to let ya'll know how it goes. |
Heck, I shoot 5 days a week here at school :-D
Glad you got permission to do it though, should be a very informative session that will open a lot of eyes and ears. |
Good on ya!

Sounds awesome, good luck!

A woman I train is from New York City. Growing up, she remembers her brother using the rifle range at the public school. And I have seen a picture of a kid about 14 putting his rifle into his locker so he could shoot that afternoon. This was in the 50's.

Sounds interesting, good to hear that everyone is cooperating with your plan!
And its funny how everything kind of tied together with the people being firearm weary and stuff :) Looking forward to seeing how it went! |
Gave my speech today. No one went out in the hall, but I think the people who would have just decided to not show up today.
Had to drop a lot of info out just to stay within the time constraints I had. |
Awesome. Kudos to you!

Wow, that's really cool. Here in the People's Republik of Kalifornia that would never happen. The cops would be all over you before you even got 50 feet of the school.
In fact, I witnessed a takedown of a student who was picking up his younger sister when he was "ambushed" by cops. Turns out that he had a bb gun in the back or something and one of the neighbors by the school saw it and called the cops. So when in Kalifornia, be VERY careful with what you do with firearms. I've had police officers eyeing the back of the car when traveling to the range. I wouldn’t be surprised if he would’ve pulled us over if there were only an excuse. Man I can’t wait to get out of here! :( Thinking of going to Maine. |
Nice job hrdwareguy.
I did my demonstrative speech on 'How To Build A Pneumatic Potato Cannon.' I did take a few precautions. I got permission from the instructor first and also printed out the statement from the ATF stating that they are not classified as firearms. I did get stopped by campus police though. I guess it was the camo uniform I was wearing or the case I was carrying with the range target on it. After doing a complete breakdown for them and flashing the ATF report I was allowed to continue to class. Got a 98% too :) |
nice job. getting one in for us. wish our campus would allow such things but they would have had a fit. great move. and being the sensable gun owner not some raving lunatic or thug is what got it for ya. as some people are learning, we arent all thugs or nuts....just normal people who enjoy guns

Just another update. I ended up getting a 97% on my speech. Lost 1 point because I went over the time limit, lost another point because I didn't have my outline in the correct format, and lost another point for something else...not sure exactly what though.

Kudos guys. I would have loved to see both reports. I would have also loved to see that potato cannon. I have a book that shows how to make sucha device but I've to take it upon myself to actually build one.
