Making a Longbow?

I've actually wanted to make one for a long time (result of watching about them) but I never knew how and could never find a good tutorial on how to build one. And another things is the wood, I know almost all British longbowmen used Yew or Ash wood but I have no idea where to get this wood. If you guys know any of these things please post. Thanks:confused:

search the net tons of kits available and a light box for drying is the only jig you'll need to make

I'v seen those but I don't think there much fun. I rather build it myself since they are faily simple.

here in ky the wood of choice is osage orange. My pops made one. It took a while for the wood to cure. (a few years)

primitive archery magazine is good for that stuff- also see book titled "the complete bowyers bible" (spelling on bowyer may be wrong)

I used to have one called "The Archer's Bible" that went into a lot of detail on making a long bow. Google should come up with something.

Simple is a relative term you know. They're just a stick with string, but the shaping will make or (literally) break the bow. Gotta be good working with wood. Should be fun.

Yeah it should and just that fact thats it was a supreme weapons for hundreds of years makes it that much better

Look for the material Yew.

LIke the one guy posted above. SCA is great for making objects of early history.

I was apart of the SCA for awhile. Made chainmail by hand. That was fun.. :<

aha! yes, I do indeed have instructions for bowmaking... ahh... the funny things I keep... :-p :-D I still need to get it organized a bit, but that should be no problem. If you would like me to send it to you as an attatchment or something, I would be happy to do so. I also have instructions for strings and arrows if you want them.

Sure I'd love to have them if it isn't a problem.

I have a 7' longbow I made 25 (gasp!) years ago. Unfortunately, I've been carrying around a broken bow for many years now as one limb broke. I'm looking for instructions, and if LadyLanceALout wouldn't mind sharing...I'd also love a copy of the instructions!

Looking forward to hearing from you...and thank.s
