Mossberg or no Mossberg?

A new gunshop opened in my town a few weeks ago and I went in to take a peek. I was more or less looking for a shotgun, that I felt I could use off shore without being worried if it would get scrathes (if it was a more expensive shotty). I stumbled over a bunch of brand new Mossberg 500's and 835's... but I'm not sure... in denmark, pump action and semi-auto's are only allowed to contain two shells, so that doesn't matter. But do anyone on these boards have experience with those two shotguns and are they worth the money? They also had a few Mavericks... The Clerk advice me to buy one of their Russían built Baikal over/under's. The Baikal is a rough and reliable firearm. Rather ugly, but so is a pumpgun with plastic stock...

What would you choose? Please give a reason for what you would pick and don't say "Pumpgun, because it's cool"!!!

Thanks in advance

With the mossberg you can opt for pistol grip or folding stock.
Are illegal here dont know about Denmark. The are a fun gun to use and I know they had one that worked either as a pump or semi with the turn of a lock.

The Baikal, you cant go to far wrong. A solid gun. Handles real well and is a very tough wearing gun.Parts are simple so seldom go wrong. Plus they are a cheap gun well worth the money

I have a Mossberg 590 and I love it. It is solidly built, has great ergonomics, and I can operate the safety and the slide release whilst in firing position. Since it is just a beefier version of the 500, you can consider this an endorsemant of that model as well.

I also have a 590, though mine is an SP model with Marinecote. I really dig the Marinecote finish. It looks like hard chrome but is designed specifically to resist corrsion offshore. It also happens to be what the US Coast Guard has used for a while now, which I find to be a good endorsement. The only problem is that it is not legal in Denmark as it has well more than 2 in the bottom tube.

Personally, if the gun is to see offshore duty, I would go with a pump gun. It is simpler, easier to maintain, and has no gas system that might decide to freeze up due to bad weather.

Maverick is just Mossberg's off-brand essentially. Finish and machining aren't quite as good, and neither is the furniture. Can't make a comment on Baikal guns as I've not owned one. Their Coach Gun is pretty sweet though =)

I just got a mossberg 500 and I love it. It came with an 18 inch security barrel, and a 28 inch field barrel.
It shoots well, feels nice, and seems to be reliable. They also have a very good reputation.

My mossberg came with a wooden dowel rod in the magazine to limit the total capacity to two rounds, but it only takes about thirty seconds to remove it which increases the capacity to six shells.

Hmm... looks like it's gonna be a Mossberg after all. If I don't like to shoot with it or don't learn to shoot with it, I can always sell it again. It's not that big of a deal, so I guess I'll buy one and then draw my own conclusions. Thanks for the advice, though. As for Moonduck: I can lagally buy that Maricote you mentioned, as long as there's a plug in the gun, that limits it's capacity to two shells. (That it's easy to remove such a plug is another talk... I mean: who counts anyway? )

Go for it then, I doubt you'll regret it. I try to keep a thin coating of oil on all my guns to keep the finish clean. I don't bother with the Marinecote Mossberg and have never even seen a stain. It's good stuff.

Mossberg's are good pump shotguns but that sloppy slide annoys me...... I'll stick with my good ole Remington 870
