i need a new utility knife, high quality, oh and it must fit CA law (which i dont know)

and some where around $100

any folding knife where the blade is less than the width of your palm (roughly 3-3.5") is legal to carry in CA. I used to carry a utility knife like this, but only if i knew i'd need it like on a trip to home depot.

what exactly are you looking for in a knife? My friend has one of these and it's very high quality, and is perpetually sharp.

I have a Smith and Wesson knife and will NEVER purchase another one, it is a sad excuse for a knife, mine stays perpetually sharp also...Because I never carry it because I am embarrassed to own such a piece of junk. My recommendation would be to get a Spyderco. I have owned and carried mine for close to 10 years now, and I still love it. This knife holds an edge unlike any I have ever used, it opens w/ one hand, and they make models that are legal to carry in Ca.

That is bullshit passed on by authorities that don't know the law. In California, there is no limit to the size of a folding knife, aside from at a K-12 school (where the limit is 2.5").

If you want something under $100, check out the Spyderco Endura, Benchmade Griptillian, and Camillus EDC.

I would recommend almost any CRKT knife, both for quality and for value.

As for Cali law, if you are buying from a knife shop, ask the staff before you buy.

If you are buying online, email or call them and verify. The nice thing about online tho is frequently they won't even ship a knife to a Cali adress that doesn't meet the legal requirements.

Agree- check local laws before you go- also note that knife law definitions are often vague on purpose- beware just because it is technicaly legal does not stop a cop from arresting you- also note that local laws may be different from the state.... when in doubt, call your local cops- they should be the ones who know- though this is no sure thing at least you can find out what they think the law is- which may be more important than the actual law...

True. Even the local cops might not know what the law really is, but if they think that your knife is illegal, you'll still be in almost as much trouble, or at least very inconvienced.

Buy a small spiderco clipit (say 2-1/2 inches?). Will cut whatever you want, and is never going to be considered "illegal" except in extreme cases (IE a courtroom, an airport, etc) If you want something bigger, laws vary by state. Where I'm from, the restriction is on CONCEALED knives... most people keep thier folder in thier pocket, and so it's considered concealed. Thus, most places you can carry a machete on your belt (technically, at least) but a spidie Police edition (4 1/4") is gonna get you in trouble if it's in your pocket. Also, keep in mind that there are seperate laws for each state, each county in that state, and each township in that county. Many towns have a knife ordanance.

The length of a knife has little effect on the capability of its edge.

At California schools, ANY knife is grounds for suspension, and depending on the teacher's mood, expulsion. It's part of the "No Tolerance" policy set up around five or six years ago. I've, uh, seen it happen before over really stupid things.

In California, folders of any length can be concealed. Fixed blades must be carried openly.

Leatherman if you want to be able to disassemble your car with one tool.

Victorinox if you want a great knife with a ton of other features that come in very handy. (has one)

Spyderco if you just need a blade and nothing else.

I bought these for the guys working for me, and they love them so I just got one for myself too. It's called a Superknife, when the blade gets dull, you just flip the utility knife blade around, or replace it with a new one. I've got a construction business, and regular knifes I dull out in minutes if I don't have a utility knife handy. Unfortunately a utility knife is not nearly as convenient to carry as a regular knife, this has proven to be a great solution.:

One of those in combination with the leatherman wave is the way to go. Between the two of them I have just about everything I need in a pinch. The great thing about the wave is you don't have to open it use either of the knives, the saw or the file, which is very convenient when you're holding something up or otherwise have one hand occupied.:

Another plug for CRKT. I have the larger Point Guard with the serrated blade. For about $50 you have a knife that is *near* the level of a Benchmade.

If you can afford it, get a Benchmade.

Saw the "Super Kinfe" at a gun and knife show yesterday. I was VERY impressed! If you are in need of a good utility knife, it looks like it would be an excellent choice.

Spyderco or Benchmade all the way. Spyderco are very affordable, you can get a really good knife for less than $40.

I still like my bucktool over the leathermans. However the wave does have that nice feature of beinga ble to get the blade out in the right direction for it to be useful.

I'd get the 50/50 myself. The serrated part cuts through rope easier, and won't dull out as quickly cutting certain materials.

But I agree with your recommendation. Spydercos are NICE knives.
