M-60

Hello im just a little intereste if anyone like the M-60, :) i like it because of the nice noise (sound) it makes when it's fired.

The_Dunedan 08-27-2003 06:04 AM

Worst machinegun of the last 60 years. Thing operates like someone crossed a Chautchaut with an MG-34 prototype, drilled a few holes in it, and machined the action out of pot metal. Jams like mad after more than about 250 rounds, if it doesn't run away on you first, and the A3 model can only fire 150-200 rounds without the barrel trying to melt off because it's so thin. To change the barrel, you have to actually -touch- it, which is a great way to get 3rd-degree burns, and the sights have to be re-adjusted after each change, because all the sighting gear is on the barrel instead of the reciever. It shakes itself to death faster than a Corvair, and if you try and load it with the bolt any less than all the way back, it slam-fires and blows the operating rod into the action; takes a vise, an angle-grinder, and a winch to get the works out after a "blow forward" like this.
There's a reason the US and Phillipines are the only places that use this thing, while the rest of the western world uses the Mag-58 or a derivative. The M-60 is junk!

Full Metal Jacket kicks my ass.

While I do admit the weapon had some problems, I think The_Dunedan was a little less than charitable.

If kept properly lubricated, I never had trouble putting 1000's of rounds out of "the pig" before cleaning.

Runaways were caused by a sear failure, not a very common occurance.

I have never heard of the A3 model, but the E3 was designed to be a lightweight weapon. True, it could only fire 100 rpm sustained, but the barrel did have a handle to speed changes.

Only the front sight is located on the barrel assembly, a trait common to every machine gun I have ever fired.

I don't see how you could load one with the bolt forward. You cannot charge the weapon if the "tophat" is not in the feed tray timing channel, so you couldn't even pull the bolt back far enough to grab a round.

All that being said, I do thing the M240B (that we now use) is a vastly superior weapon.

good i just want some more feedback on what you think of the M-60.

Has anybody seen anything on the new M-60 E4 ? I saw a video on it a few weeks back. Seems like they did a lot to the barrel to acutally make it last a lot longer. The video was a test they put it through, 850 rounds in a minute forty five. And they say they can put 15,000 rounds through the barrel until it needs changing. Thoughts?

I would guess that means until the barrel wears out. Doesn't affect the everyday performance of the weapon.

I've never used the M60 before, but as debaser has said, the FN MAG or the M240 and its various variants (like co-axials etc) is a VERY good weapon.

The main page there with more videos is

The video showing them shoot 76mm High Impulse Weapon System is pretty funny. The guy keeps telling him to keep 80% of his weight on his front foot as he fires. Just watch it until the end and you will see.

whiskeybravo 02-10-2004 11:48 AM

they do work and the work well, they outperformed any machinegun of its time when it was introduced.

Mastershredder 02-21-2004 09:24 AM

Hahahah that HIWS was hilarious when the guy didn't put 80% of his weight on his front leg and just fell backwards :)

Asuka{eve} 03-06-2004 11:01 PM

what about the mg-3?

spiderbomb 03-13-2004 01:02 AM

I love the M-60! It's gettin' replaced with the SAW rifle, but the M-60 is where it's at. It's just the right weight and everything. Then next step up (a HP .50 cal) is about 128lbs, but the M-60 is just right. The muzzle flash is awesome too.

tkkfan 04-05-2004 08:52 AM

The M-60 is outdated and heavy. The SAW was it's replacement and since then has been replaced, by what I can't remember. But isn't it wierd that the SAW rifle uses .223 (JUST A little bit larger than a .22) Obviously more gunpowder tho

Cobalt_60 04-06-2004 12:27 AM

The M249 SAW was not the replacement for the M60. The M240G Medium Machine Gun manufactured by Fabrique Nationale replaced the M60 series.

http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/m240g.htm

After extensive operational and technical tests, the US Army has selected and type classified the M240B 7.62mm medium machine gun produced by Fabrique Nationale as a replacement for the M60 Series machine gun. This is a ground mounted variant of the original M240/M240C/M240E1 coaxial/pintle mounted machine gun used on M2/M3 Series Bradley Fighting Vehicles, the M1 Series Abrams tank, and the U.S. Marine Corps LAV-Series of Light Armored Vehicles. While possessing many of the same basic characteristics as the M60 Series medium machine guns, the durability of the M240 system results in superior reliability and maintainability when compared to the M60.

Manufacturer: Fabrique Nationale Manufacturing, Inc.
Length: 47.5 inches (120.65 centimeters)

Bore diameter: 7.62mm (.308 inches)
Maximum effective range: 1.1 miles (1.8 kilometers) on tripod mount

The MG-3 is also basically the MG-42, why change a successful design? ;)
