I am looking for a fun gn for just haveing fun with. I was thinking a ruger 10/22 but If you guys have any suggestions I would be open to them. by the way this gun will also probably do double duty as a coyote gun.(they frak out the cows something awful.)

I find .45 ACP fun... fun only though... it's more then I can handle... but it feels real satisfying when I shoot it. It's also a bit expensive and a challenge to shoot well.

a 10/22 is a little small for coyotes. for that you want at least a 22 magnum which ruger does make in the 10/22 style i think the modle is a 77/22 although the ammo can run about $6 to $8 per 50 rounds much more expensive than your plain 22 ammo. if it is just for plinking and squirles i would recomend the 10/22 if you are going after yotes go bigger

Another good/fun round in a rifle is .243 or .270. Small fast rounds will take down a yote easy enough, but you may have to watch out for the bullet exiting and still having power. When I go out and hunt yote nobody is around but me for miles, so a .308 does me great.
Basically it just depends on how well you shoot. I shoot yotes with a .22 and havent not killed one yet. But Im not shooting over 100 yards and always go for a head shot.

I agree that the 10/22 is a great inexpensive rifle for fun, squirels, rabbits, etc., but the .22 long is underpowered for coyotes.

The Rugar Mini14 (.223) is a good choice for coyotes, but I would buy a Bushmaster Varminter (AR15) before a Mini14 if that was what I needed it for.

.22 is too small for coyotes unless you're shooting at close distance and then shot placement is a must. If you want something that's fun yet 'somewhat' affordable (nothing will be as cheap as the .22) then I'd go for a .223. Ruger makes several varieties including the mini-14 which will probably be your cheapest. Should be able to find a good used one for under $500 but prices range drastically depending upon the part of the country you're from. You can buy decent hunting ammo for that if your tagging coyotes or cheaper FMJ for target shooting

I don't really have to worry about the bullet exiting with power left to burn, Its the noise I worry about. Like I said, Its a farm, but there are neighbors within like a mile who wouldn't want to be woken up by me shooting yotes. If I didn't have to worry about that, Id just use my shotgun.

I really like the Mini-14. If a .223 isn't too much noise, you really might want to look into them. Rugged and well-built (no surprise for a Ruger), the one I have is very handy and shoots better than I do.

For pure plinking, nothing beats a .22lr though. I like the Ruger 10/22 and a number of Marlin's choices. With the Marlins, I prefer the ones what load from a longitudinal tube under the barrel. It's a tad slower to reload, but holds significantly more, and I find their magazines don't hold up all that well comparatively.

glock 9mm most models or the sig 9 mm are fun guns to shot... they will cost you though

Get a Ruger 10/22 Magnum. That way you can convert the barrel to a 17 HMR, and you will not have to worry about noise from that thing. Its not real quiet, but is not much louder then a .22 Long Rifle.

Also, the velocity from it makes anything you shoot, insides to jelly. So shooting coyotes would be no problem.

Go get an SKS in 7.62x39 or a Mosin Nagant in 7.62x54R.

Ammo is cheap (buy Wolf), guns are cheap (You can get an SKS for under $150, MN's for under $90), accurate, and fun.

Check out aimsurplus.com, cdnninvestments.com... and some other websites I can't think of right now. If you have a Big 5 Sporting Goods nearby, they'll probably have Nagants you can go fondle.

Understand these are surplus weapons, some of which are 50+ years old. A blast, though.

Mosin Nagant is very loud but is very good for off hand shooting and I have found the ammo is cheap also......

If you have access to some machining tools you can buy a 10/22 and modify the receiver to shoot .22 LR, .22 WMR (magnum) or .17 HMR with a change of barrel... take a look at www.rimfirecentral.com some time

How far do you plan on shooting? The Ruger 10/22 would be plenty effective on coyotes even out around 100 yds. You' ll just need to account for a little drop. Further, and I'd go with the 22 magnum.

The ruger 10/22 is an excellent choice, Ammo is cheap, they are well built, and an absolute blast to shoot. You may find it small for coyotes at first, but as your skills improve you will find it is plenty of gun.

if you get the mini 14 do your research...its a nice gun but there are tons of them....dont pay to much.....$200 is the highest i would pay

man a 10/22 is one of the biggest money pits you can buy . you get one and all the sudden you fight out you have sunk 1000 in customizing a 200 dollar rifle

or you get an ar-15 and put 5000 into a 1000 dollar rifle . for varmet work a .223 is about the best. ive been hearing good things out of .17hmr but i swear i wouldnt shoot anything bigger than a groundhog with on.

but for over all fun...10/22 or an ar-15, its all about budget.

.223 is a great gun and excellent for coyotes and other varmint. I'm not a big Mini-14 fan though because they are not that accurate compared to a good bolt action rifle. Several manufactures make light-weight .223 in composite stocks and stainless steel barrels that are quite accurate and tough as nails.

One cool things about a ruger 10/22 is you can convert them to be fully automatic. Not sure what good it would do though.
