If you could only own one firearm...
 

If you could only keep/buy one firearm, what would it be?

I am asking because I am trying to decide what the most versatile firearms are.

I can guess that if you lived in montana or the likes, a bolt action high power rifle might be the best choice since long range shots are the norm.

For here in North Carolina, I am leaning towards a nice pump action 12 gauge with a medium length barrel and screw in chokes.

What would you guys choose?

A carbine
 

A compromise between range, power, and flexibilty in close combat situations.

The tried and true american carbine "seems" to be the m4.

I asked in another thread about other ideas for a carbine, I don't know of any civilian available models based on other military ideas like the steyr aug.

One that fires? A Glock.

If I had to choose one, I'd say a CAR-15.
It's the little sister to the M-16, lighter, smaller, but fires the same rounds. Perfect for everything.

The first question is, what are the circumstances?

All around fun: My AR-15

-Just a fun gun to shoot, can be used in a pinch for hunting and is decent at self defense.

Urban Defense situation: Shotgun

-a semi-auto or pump shot gun is great for defense in tight quarters, and slugs can be used for hunting if necessary

SHTF/TEOTWAWKI: Ruger 10/22

The best gun over all for The End Of The World As We Know It.
Ammo is plentiful and cheap, can be used for hunting small game and self defense. Parts are common and the gun is rugged.

I see three guns as possibilities for TEOTWAWKI:

CAR-16: Good little carbine, plentiful ammo, shitloads of parts.

FAL Paratrooper: Sort of the middle road between the other two, has enough punch for larger game/thin skinned vehicles.

AR-10: Accurate, powerful, hard to find parts, stay away from towns.

I would lean towards 9mm Glock

I was deliberately leaving it open ended, just to see what people would choose, and why. I.e. would they go with a battle rifle, a practical .22, etc.

I'd probably pick my AR-15. just an all around fun assault rifle.

Define firearm. f a SA-18 counts as a firearm, then I would chose that. I could domminate both land, sea, and air targets.

If we are talking about fictional or soon to be firearms, I would definently want a Redeemer.

44 caliber pistol with 10 inch barrel, revolver. Can be used as self defense close quarters weapon, with practice long shots are easy and has the knockdown power to kill most game animals in North America so you won't go hungry. Revolver not auto because I feel they are more reliable.

This weapon reminds me of the Annihilator 2000 from Beverly Hills Cop 3. It is big, it kills, and it can microwave pop-corn!

what no one choosing a MINIGUN? How about a M2HB to carry around all day?

How about this. AR-10 w/ M-203(don't know if the two are compatable, but it sure sounds fun). My reasons: 1. Decent hunting and combat round(lots of ammo available) 2. High capacity 3. Proven design 4. Somewhat compact 5. Lots of accessories 6. It's got a freakin' grenade launcher(what more can I say)

I would be fun to have a 203. I dont know if its possible but it would be nice to have an M-14 with a M203 type launcher instead of firing a grenade from the muzzle.

A rem. 870 is nice and you can get different barlles for different hunting

My Rem .870 with the rifled and smoothbore barrels same as the poster way above this one. Can hunt anything in ohio with it mostly.

I think I'd pick a HK 33KEA2 or a HK MSG90... Something like that, yeah...

If I were in a SHTF situation I'd want an AR-15. The 5.56mm round is good for varmiting and small game, with a large mag capacity and enough shots will put the big kill down, and if I have to will put a hurt on anyone that I can practically hit with it. Ok, so it loses a lot of it's terminal balistics out past 300 yards but I know that I could never make that shot anyway so I don't care. Ammo for it is PLENTIFUL, and parts are all over the place. .22 ammo is cheaper, yes, but I'd rather stockpile 5.56 and know that if I had to use it on something bigger than a rabbit that I could put it down.

In a real-world situation, not thinking of TEOTWAWKI, I'd go with a full-sized 1911-A1. I have 2 of them and it's by far the most versatile handgun I've ever used. I can't argue with the stopping power of the .45, and yeah it is part americana but fuck it, I love that gun. Since I live in the city I think a good hard hitting pistol would be more practical for home defense and day to day use than an MBR or carbine.

Heckler-Koch is, of course, my preferred company. Which gun, though? Probably the G-11 or PSG-1. The G-11 for no other reason than if any intruder saw it pointed at them, I think they'd leave IMMEDIATELY. The PSG-1 because it's perfect for hunting, long shot, and works as a self-defense weapon just fine in a pinch. Oh, and because it's in Metal Gear Solid. :D

I like my S&W 357, but it depends on what you want on for. Target shooting, hunting or home defense. If you want something for home defense get a dog.

you were thinking correctly in the first place, while many of the folks are suggesting very good weapons for their purpose, if you want something for all around use (remember that doesn't mean it's the BEST for each situation but a compromise for each) the go for a 12-gauge.

You can bird hunt, deer hunt (a lot of areas in the east have restrictions on where you can rifle hunt anyway), shoot for enjoyment (clays) and also a good home defense weapon when loaded with the right ammo. Biggest thing as with any weapon, get familiar with it, go out and put several boxes of ammo through it so you feel comfortable with it just in case you would need to use it in an emergency.

My M1 Garand, which was retrofitted by the Navy to 7.62 x 51 mm.

As an alternative for the apocalypse, I would like to have a Barret semi-auto BMG .50. In case I have to kill an armored car or something.

Can't go wrong with a shottie pump, tho. Low, low maintenance and high, high kill ratio. Load it up with that vintage vietnam 12-gauge flachete and evaporate your target. Or load it with solid core steel armor piercing slugs and, once again, you have an armored car killer.
