M4A1, it's knockoffs, and other carbines - What's your favorite carbine?
So in a perfect world I would have money to buy all sorts of gunz, gamez, and girlz.
And the ammunition and sports cars to go with it. It ain't, but I can dream right? If I were going in the 1k range for a carbine, with emphasis on the fact that's it would actually be used for self defense. What carbine would I get? [EDIT] But please... the whole israel thing is an aside, I am asking wondering, in the perfect world what would your carbine be? [/EDIT] I plan on moving to Israel for graduate school and I will live on a settlement that is not so infrequently the subject of sniper fire in the settlement itself, and on the roads of the surrounding area. Everyone travels armed in that area... I would have guard duty about once every other week... lovely place to live I know... :-( A weapon that is comfortable, light, and easier to carry and move from car to house, and back, and all over the place. Being able to modify the sights of the weapon to suit technology/preference is also a bit important, althought I have yet to own a rifle so I am not really up to speed on options in that department. Also note that Israel is a country that allows civilians to equip with the heavier weaponry. I still only want a semi-automatic weapon, but there have to be high capacity magazines available outside this country. |
As galled as I am that you will be living on a settlement (subject for another thread), I would reccomend an M-16 of some flavor. Not sure of the gun laws in Israel, but I would suggest getting a 16inch barrel (a full 16 inches, not the 11.5 with the extended flash suppressor) with a collapsable stock. Forget the flat-top stuff, just get an A-2 upper and use the iron sights.
I would suggest getting the weapon, or compnents if you decide to go that route, from Bushmaster or Armalite, don't scrimp on cheap parts. If you don't have to bollock around with the pre/post ban garbage you should be able to get into one for about 6-700$. |
I don't agree with the settlements much either... I think the government should provide housing and space to anyone who wants to move back into a settlement...
Life in the middle east is fair for no one. :-( And I certainly don't want to live there... but the University houses their grad students there, and Israel happens to be some sweet shiz in the field of computer science. It's hopefully only going to be for 3 years. |
Well, keep your head down. And spend the $300 you save on a good vest.
|
I concur whole heartedly on the vest suggestion. Point Blank would be my choice and I would keep the hard points on board at all times.
Can't stress train, train, train enough. Unless you know how to use effectively whatever weapon you possess...it is useless. Don't know much about Israel and it's 'settlements' but I would start with an H&K PDW. Easily brief case concealed (I do not advocate such a concealment mind you) with caliber configs suitable for most tastes...all in lethal doses. Easy to handle, quick to train on and deadly as a m$$ther-f##ker. I'm sure the Israeli's have come up with something similar and location and availablity of upgrades should always be a consideration. The Israeli's are experienced with the sort of protections they need and have tailored they're gun-smithing appropriately. Probably the best advice I could offer is...check with your neighbors...they'll know the haps better then anyone. Can't imagine ANY better defense in that God-foresaken place then vigilance. Best of luck and never let your guard down, -bear |
Kel, are you Israeli/Jewish? I am only interested because I can't imagine that it would be illegal for a non-citizen to carry a firearm around.
|
I am Israeli/Jewish
Jewish only actually... in order to encourage me to emigrate to Israel the government is willing to pay for my graduate education... I'm not asking any questions... the women there are hot and they all want to get hooked up with american guys who can bring them to the
US. Got the idea because one of my professors knows someone who knows someone who could use a someone like me around :-) To carry a firearm I might have to become a citizen, but that doesn't mean much. I don't pay taxes and I still get my US citizenship. Now to just finish up undergrad which is taking forever because I have no money :-( But please... the whole israel thing was an aside, I am still wondering, in the perfect world what would your carbine be? |
One carbine that's based on the M4 is the Rock River Entry Tactical model:
http://www.rockriverarms.com/m4_entry_tactical.htm Because of the shortened stock and 16" barrel it's a very manageable size. You may also want to invest in a good collapsable stock and a pre-ban upper (with flash supressor) since I'm assuming that the brady bill has no relevancy over there. I purchased one of these at a gun show for under 800 and it's by far my favorite rifle. If you want to fire with iron sights you can, otherwise you can remove the iron sights and use it as a flat-top to attach your favorite reflex sight. Good clean fun. Good luck over there, always be vigilant and hope you never need to use your weapon. Jason |
In a perfect world, there would be no need for weapons... but anyway: I'd like an M2 US Carbine... it's old, it got a wooden stock and it's a nice weapon to shoot. :) (unfortunately I only have the older M1 Carbine :( ) anyway... for practical use: Any rifle/carbine from HK. :) I like german weapons.
