NERF weaponry

There are many of us out there that love to play paintball, but when running around on a college campus at night, that is kind of illegal. Therefore, the only alternative is water guns (which pretty much suck) or NERF warfare. I use two weapons, the 20-round full-auto model that looks reminiscent of a gattling gun crossed with a tear-drop, and my NERF sniper rifle.

The original concept came to me from a buddy, but you can find variations and creation instructions conveniently on the Internet.

First, you buy a big super soaker. I mean a pretty big one, like the CPS 2500 (or whatever flavor that Super Soaker has put out that summer). You want a squirter with a large pump, and a decently-sized water tank; however, the pump is the key component.

Second, get a 3/4" coupling; glue this onto the front of the soaker, so that the water-dispensing barrel is centered in the coupling.

Lastly, cut a 1/2" pipe down to 12" and wrap a bit of tape at one end. Be sure to smooth off any burs on either end!

Into this you will insert one of the micro-darts that NERF sells; then simply plug the barrel into the coupling, and start pumping. You have to pump until the soaker can pump no more, then take aim and squeeze off a round. If you've done it right, the dart should travel around 40-50 ft; which is considerably longer range than any conventional, store-bought NERF weaponry.

Have fun!

Yeah thats the big problem with nerf wars is that to get any kind of range you have to sacrifice the automatic feature. Plus without pait they just claim it didn't hit them.

Actually, there is a way; but you have to find an old paintball gun, and disassemble it. I have a Bruizer sport, which is basically pistol paintball gun. Kind of heavy, but the real trick is to create a feeding system for the chamber/barrell. I'm working on a gravity fed clip, consisting of a box made of hand-cut cardboard pieces, where the darts would be stored. This "clip" would have to be arranged vertically over the chamber; the only problem occurs when you release the first shot; all the others tend to ride up, then jam.

We used to have more fun with the NERF bow and arrow... God how I loved that thing...

They also used to make one that shot balls. You put this little foam ball in the end, and pushed the plunger thing as hard as you could... It would make a loud "POW" noise, and the ball would go a good 30, 35 feet with some pretty nice accuracy. They dont make them anymore, I dont think... Probably "too dangerous," or some other such nonsense.

I don't believe in NERF guns, and will never understand the motivation for someone to carry them. You are far more likely to injure yourself with one than if you did not have one.

i'd get a NERF sniper rifle. that'd be fun probly. if it hurts less than a paintball gun (which doesnt hurt that much but still) then if you shoot your friends ( or random ppl, but mainly your friends) then that would be really cool.

it would be funny and not really hurt

actually, if I remember correctly, NERF did indeed make sponge-tipped darts for a short time, in the early 90s. they also made three different concealable models that used glow in the dark darts - one was a wrist-launcher, much like spider-man's web shooters, one was to be stuck on a wall, so as to be fired from around a corner, and one was a pistol that could fold to the size of a normal palm.

not a bad idea, but toys 'r' us carries junk, mostly, nowadays. and nerf hasn't done much for good weaponry since a long time ago... once, there was the javelin (which was sweet), the bow and arrow, the sharpshooter, and a few other good ones, but now...

In college we used those guns that fired small platic discs roughly the size of a dime. There was a gang of us that were packing wherever we went, lest be be ambushed. The disk stung a wee bit at close range, but only if you hit bare skin.

Ahh, what delicious hobbies we all have. I have a few ROTC buddies that play some pretty hard-core airsoft with their troupe. Well, they're actually twins, but that's neither here nor there. One of'em uses a scaled-down looking U.S. M4 (modern version) and the other uses an HK MP5-clone. Those things are cool! I mean, you could rob a bank or something; people would think those are totally real, until you started zingin'em with yellow plastic pellets, of course. I'd just like to say that I thoroughly approve of AirSoft; my hat's off to all my fellow weekend warriors. By the way--never put needles into your NERF darts; we don't need to get anyone sued, and have NERF toys added to the next version of the "Ban All Guns" Bill.

Also--please don't go robbin' and stealin' with AirSoft; you'll get yourself hurt. And all my toys taken away.

Nerf Weaponry

What are your favorite Nerf Weapons?

Mine is, and will always be the classic Nerf Bow 'n' Arrow. That thing had distance, accuracy, everything. The only problem was they broke semi-frequently. I think I had my parents buy me one 4 or 5 times for that very reason.

Ah, to be a kid again!

The Nerf Bow and Arrow was the koolest nerf toy ever. True about it breaking all the time though, I think I went through 3 or 4 myself. I still have a few mini turbo footballs laying around the house to throw at the girl friend when it's that time of the month. People need more nerf in their homes to solve family conflicts instead of resulting to domestic violence.

Be careful They do not appreciate instore testingof any of the nerf toys. My brother-in-law and I have been kicked out of the Toys-R-Us 7 times usually around christmas when we are out shopping for the "kids". you figure they would eventually put a sign at the door with our picture saying keep out but not yet so far so good.

A wet nerf football is probably the best hwen you hit someone they know it and they fly a lot further wet than they do dry.

WTF?

NERF rocks! I haven't seen one of those in years - it's been far too long. I almost missed this entire thread, actually, because I didn't immediately recognize "NERF".

Thanks for the memories.

Yo, seretogis was being delightfully sarcastic; it's a reference to all those Brady-brill advocates and gun-control fanatics that say that having a gun makes you more likely to be shot by one. As if you're more likely to be shot by your own gun or something. Good grief. Way to go on the wit, Seretogis.

Edit: This las post was made by Superjoe247, who forgot to log me off before posting. Not that I disagree or anything.

Alas... I sold my nerf bows at a yard sale a few years ago. Only to arrive at college, and spend at least $20 on various cheap nerf guns. The quality has definitely gone downhill since they originally came out. The new guns can barely shoot across a dorm room, and the darts break often. That's why we've switched to super soakers and water balloons. Yes, in the winter. In upstate NY. Ok, so my friends and I are a bit crazy, I'll admit...

We used to get into Nerf wars where I worked (A big baby bell). I miss that place sometimes. I have a Chainblazer with extra chains. I can pop off about 30 darts in under 2 minutes pretty accuratly up to 20 feet.

Update on the NERF sniper rifle: Finding a better bullet.

First of all, 3:30 AM isn't such a great time to attempt writing intelligently, but here goes! Well, it turns out that those micro-darts just weren't designed to be efficiently ballistic. Rest assured, there are a few things you can do. First of all, use a different foam projectile. The ever-present "they" make a foam cylinder that can be cut down to make ammo. Unlike the micro dart, this material is solid (well, as solid as foam can be) and a little bit stiffer. By dolloping a bit of epoxy on the tip you can add mass to the dart, and give all that beautiful airflow something to push. This augmentation can be made to your standard micro-dart as well, however, you'll have to trim down the dart so that it isn't so incredibly front-heavy. After all, a dart that spins end over end is about as useful as a lead zeppelin. As far as effects go, I won't promise that you can raise accuracy by 30%, or that you can double your range. However, you should notice a different in both accuracy and range. Keep in mind that these augmentations work for regular NERF weaponry as well, since all you're doing is altering the size of the ammo. Keep in mind, however, that the shortened darts might not work so well, since they aren't going to fit into the NERF chambers; after all, they're too short! But, don't let that stop you from experimenting!

I bought "for my nephew," one of those ones that shoot those thick rubber bands. Aside from being a bit tough to aim and jamming up pretty frequently, that sucker just sails straight through the air, and you can watch it almost as though its in slow motion. Those suckers can do some damage, but just don't live up to the NERF of old.

A while back we made basically a potato launcher but used those NERF balls soaked in water as the projectiles. (PVC tubing, cap on one end with starter switch from a gas grill, and a bit of hairspray/starter fluid/whatever in the bottom.) That thing worked pretty good, but those balls just dont have enough mass to do the distance.
