at a book sale i recently boutgh volumes 1, 5, and 8-10 of the Encyclopedia of Explosives and Related Items. Among the entries i found was RDX, the explosive component of C4. The entry states that the detonation is about 8800 m/sec. Some serious boom! Not to mention it makes appearances in the Metal Gear games and absolutely wrecks garbage cans.

any other favorite boom substances?

C4: Fun and versatile. Light it on fire in your folding camp stove: a hunk the size of a large marble can heat soup. Also useful for logging with rotted and dangerous trees, although obviously not for anything you want to save.

Tannerite: easily available over the internet, more powerful than 80% dynamite, lots of ass and can be set off with a rifle bullet. Makes for some fun parties, but lots of expansion velocity means lots of launch potential. Keep well back if you're using it to blow up microwaves or refrigerators.

ANFO: most useful for agricultural blasting. Does a great job on stumps and rocks due to the slow detonation: if lifts them out whole or in a few large chunks, rather than turning everything into dust and shrapnel and a huge crater. Alternatively, placed in a cavity below hardened surfaces like hard stone in quarries or when digging ponds, ANFO creates a very large crater indeed, making it also a very versatile explosive. Not exactly EFP material, but very useful stuff nonetheless.

Thermite: Useful for starting campfires in Monsoons and welding large hunks of metal together. Also makes a useful booster in other explosive mixtures.

And of course good old black Gunpowder. You can start fires with it, you can use it in fireworks, you can use it for blasting, -and- you can load it into cartridges for firearms. Gotta love it.
