300 fps is not particularly good, no (although it's not terrible either). Air guns often fire up to 500 fps, and some of the most powerful even go upwards of 1000.
As a matter of safety though, I suggest you avoid shooting glass bottles.

What exactly are you looking for here? REAL target shooting without the hassles of gun ownership? Or just something to dink around with in your free time?
If its just something for you to blow off steam with, 300fps will be fine. Keep in mind tho, thats more than enough to break a window. Heres the obligatory pic that I cant post here http://www.paulmcelligott.com/images...tmas_story.jpg

I used to shoot cans in my back yard with a Daisy Quicksilver - IIRC it was around 300 fps also... if you use pointed/round pellets it'll go through soda cans, or probably get caught inside steel ones. Might bounce off, might not... it's definitely enough to pierce skin at close range, and remember lead is a toxic substance. If you need more kick out of it, try the Beeman gold colored pellets... they're made of some kind of light weight alloy for higher FPS. From a 177 pellet out of a pistol I'd expect 400 fps, though. 300 has quite an arc to it from across the yard.

Get a Beeman Tempest
spring piston action (no CO2 to buy) and pushes almost 500fps

Honestly, ash, just go with something that'll get you 450+ fps. They're entirely safe when used properly (as most things are). I wouldn't use them in my backyard, but I wouldn't use a 300 fps air pistol in my backyard either (I'm talking inner city, 800 sq ft backyard though, not something more rural). Generally, if it's safe to use a 300 fps airgun, it's probably safe to use a higher-powered one (with the exception of the really high-powered 800+ fps ones). in the same area. Regarding the spring gun: I would personally avoid it. When you're shooting something as small as pellets or bbs it's almost invariably going to be for plinking (with the occasional person murdering small animals as well), and the fun of plinking is multiple shots - to me anyway. For a pistol I would recommend a more powerful CO2 weapon.
