Ruger 10/22 Upgrades
 

Not all that impressive but I thought somebody might benefit from seeing what a little cosmetics can do to a Ruger 10/22. The top gun is stock. the bottom guns have some accessories...

anybody else have a tweaked out plinker?

Ummm... by the "bottom guns" do you actually mean the bottom gun (singular)? It is the same rifle after all.

That being said, it is super fucking sweet, and I want one (or two).

well that really depends on if when I say gun(s) I am referring to the image of the gun (which I was) or the actual firearm. If I were referring to the actual firearm, could I really even say 'top gun' and 'bottom gun' being that they are truly the same gun (as legal definitions of firearms go).

But what I think it comes down to is that your pointing out is that I photoshopped 3 pictures of my gun together into 1 and that I don't have 3 ruger 10/22 but in fact only 1 :P

I'd post a pic, but my .22's are notoriously un tacti-cool.


what kind of mags are you sporting there, whats the capacity and do they work?

I only ever had one ram-line mag, and that did'nt survive the 2 foot fall out of the back of the car onto the grass :rolleyes:

thats a butler creek hotlips mag. 25 rounds capacity. I've put about 2k rounds through it and its not showing any sign of slowing down, I havent been particularly gentle nor particularly rough... the first 200 rounds or so I had a handfull of FTFs, but that has cleared up now. Part of the problem is that I wasnt paying attention to how many rounds I was stuffing in it, it will hold 26-27 but is only rated (and only works well with) 25.

ramline mags are notorious for being pieces of shit. Theyr'e attractive because they have 50 round capacities for the same price as the butler creek 25 rounders... I have been tempted to pick one up a few times, but everytime I see a review I cringe. Twice the capacity doesnt mean anything if you have to TRB or drop the mag to clear a misfeed every other round...

I've got one of the butler creek hotlips mags too... works like a dream. I got it used (probably thousands of rds of ammo through it) so it was well beyond the break in period for me. No failures on the mags part yet, and the 10/22 is a damn good rifle. Only a couple FTF/FTEs so far, in several thousand rounds.

Winchester dynapoints are notoriously consistent bulk rounds, by the way - pick up a box at your local K-mart iffen you can :D

Are the dynapoints copper jacketed? I was shooting remington thunderbolts but the lead fouling was making it take 3x as long to clean the bitch, and my time is worth more than that. I shoot Federal Game-Shok now.

They're copperwashed, with a small hollowpoint. Are the game-shoks actually jacketed? I didn't know there were 22LR's that came with a real jacket.

In my 10/22 the dyna's are much cleaner than any other bulk ammo I've used, though I know a great deal of that is the propellant alone. I also clean my rifle habitually with a patch worm. The patch worm (or homemade implement of the same type) will clean any barrel more safely than brushes and steel rods, and has no way to really damage the bore. For really tough copper/lead fouling, you can use the felt buttons with brass fibers for the patch worm, or use an intensive solvent like Wipe-Out for an hour or overnight. In my rifle I've only ever had to use patches and solvent, though.

Oh, as a side note: I remember the thunderbolts well. I hated their propellant - it got my entire action gunked up after a while, and didn't shoot for sh*t. I also remember remington golden bullets - the bulk extra cheap ammo. The consistency was so bad every shot *sounded* different from the last: Pop, ping, pow, bang, pew, poo, blam, pop, kink, zoik, putt, splat. Dirty as the thunderbolts, so I shot em all rapidfire and never went back.

CCI is also a good manufacturer, but their rounds are a bit more specialty than bulk and cheap. Dynapoints can be had for $10-12 per 500, but I don't know of anything widely available from CCI for the same price. However, CCI mini-mags and velocitors are the most fun to shoot rounds I've used - you get a real BLAM out of em, and they're pretty consistent. Make sure you don't shoot Stingers by them, because their cases are too long and could mess up your chamber. Also, the twist rate is wrong for such high velocity, so accuracy goes down the crapper ;). The plastic cases are very nice to reuse for bulk rounds, too.

Dynapoints are much quieter, which I like for bulk shooting. They may also, depending on your barrel length, be subsonic. They're subsonic for me out of a 20" (I think) barrel, but should be supersonic out of the stock 16.5" 10/22 (mine's a wal-mart special, from before they stopped selling guns).

Oh, one more thing: get rid of that barrel band on the front of your gun. It'll only decrease consistency and accuracy by binding the barrel to the stock. Ideally, you want the barrel to be floating in the barrel channel. The receiver may be aluminum, but it's pretty tough and can handle floating a 16.5" tapered barrel. With heavier or longer barrels, or if you're paranoid, you can add a single pressure point to the very front of the stock to apply upward pressure, but you want to avoid binding it to the stock as much as you can. Try sanding it out until a dollar bill will slide under the barrels length with you holding it under the barrel - the factory barrels arent *terrible*, but the stock setup is :thumbsup:

No, they are only copperwashed, I just refer to them as jacketed cause I had never heard them called anything else. What is the lowest power ammo you know of? the dynapoints?

The patch worm looks interesting, I only use boresnakes, but I might order a patchworm for the hell of it.

The dynapoints are probably middle ground in the power department... if you want something real low power and very quiet you can shoot out of your 10/22, check out CCI CB Longs - there's no powder in the casing, just the primer. velocities are around 600fps I think, and they're only a bit louder than a strong pellet gun out of my 20" barrel - a bit more from stock. The problem is they're hard to find and more expensive. Also easily confused with CCI CB Shorts, which are in the .22 short case, and, while they'll fire out of a 10/22 just fine, they won't feed out of a stock magazine.

If you're feeling brave, venture over to www.rimfirecentral.com - they're a forum pretty well dedicated to the 10/22 and after that all things rimfire, but I can only stand so much because people are always talking about the same damn thing that they could just use the search feature for. Lots of useful information if you can wade through the n00bs asking "what barrel is best" and other such stuff. Many things just come down to personal preference.
