SOCOM

I have a very general question about this gun. I first found out about it from a videgame called Metal Gear Solid. It's the main character's weapon of choice. I was just curious if anyone has used it and how practical/powerful the gun is.

It is a .45 ACP pistol and so will be more or less on par with other fullsize .45 ACP pistols (1911, for instance).

I don't think the pistol is practical at all, actually. The thing is huge, unecessarily so. The USP Tactical is smaller and 'handier' than the SOCOM model but performs just about as well.

It is just too big to be used for anything except a few very specialized roles where a soldier needs to be armed but for whatever reason has to be armed with a pistol only.

Are you referring to the rifle or the pistol?

I've never fired either, so I have no input.

The HK USP SOCOM is a tricked out big .45. It's bigger than the 1911. I know more than one person who says they're tough, reliable weapons and I have no reason to doubt them. I believe the one in the game has the laser module which is, arguably, an unnecessarily accessory to begin with. Also has a silencer.

It's not a pistol people (other than videogamers) generally lust over. It's probably suited for more specific operations.

Here's the item:

It looks like this without the laser sight/flashlight:

And like this with them (this is the airsoft version. I couldn't find a weapon version with that attachment):

Great guns but, as several people have said, somewhat application-specific. It'd be a great platform for a dedicated "bedside table gun," since a longer barrel, rail-mounted light, and possibly even a suppressor if your State allows it are ideal for such a setup.*

As a carry piece, notsomuch. Unless you're planning to open carry (Montana?), it's just too bulky. That nice long barrel and comfey grip come at a price.

*I refer to such as a "Boston gun," after Boston T. Party, the first gun-writer I read advance this concept. It may not have been his idea, but that was where I heard of it first. Boston does not mention suppressors, and such could easily render the pistol unwieldly in close quarters.
