i have started to accumulate to many knives and was wondering what everyone thought the best knife is. i guess it opens up to what you plan to use it for, defense, utility, show.... so i leave it out there.

i have to default to my microtech ultratech, small, strong usefull.

Strider makes the best production knives. Period.

Other than that you get into custom work, which will generally knock the pants off mass produced knives, of course you will rarely pay less than a grand for a good blade...

Actually for sheer combat purposes there is a knife that I have to recommend. If you ever saw that second riddick movie with Vin Diesel, there you go. It is a recurved knife, with the blade folding over the knuckled, going back towatd the elbow, covering part of the forearm. It can also be held blade poiting out simply by reversing your grip, being a swordsman I can appreciate the asthetics and fuctionality of such a blade. It takes a bit more skill to weild, but is better in quite a few ways then your simple straight knife. I would check it out if I were you, you may find you like it quite a bit. Allows for a much wider varierty of freedom in your attacks, as well as protecting the hand, though that should not be your thought in combat, still thats a bonus that can not be ignored. Also, the design allows for punching and tearing attacks, tearing because the metal that runs along the knuckles is serrated, like I said, very good knife. Chronicles of Riddick is the movie name, check it out, very good knife design.

Actually debaser your talking from the point of view of someone who doe's not know much about knives really. Go to a good gun and knife show, you can get good custom made blade starting around 250, and yes, on up to 1,000. You can pay too much for anything, and people who don't know a lot about blades but think they do always throw around the 1,000 dollar fantasy figure. It's a real figure of course if you don't know of what you speak. Custom knife should nt be costing that though my friend, that's getting into custom sword territory, not custom knifes, they ake a heck of a lot less time then a sword to make. Now a custom sword, they start around 1,500 in the states, but you can buy them from over seas for a fraction of that. Later.

Granted, I doubt I'd be using anything over $1,000. My most expensive user is my G&G Hawk External Toggle for $650.

Well... Without being too patriotic here.. I have to say the best all purpose (excluding combat) knife would be mod F1 from Fallkniven, and the best blade I've wielded in "combat" is also Fallknivens mod A1. I have the A1 but unfortunently lost my F1 a while back during a hike

The are both made of laminated VG10 steel, hard to sharpen but has unprecedented strength and endurance.

If my memory serves me right one of the special forces in the US use one of their knives aswell, as their basic allround (including combat) knives. Though i forgot which one.

Ok, pal. I'll just check out that "Chronical of Riddick knife" you recommend then. Oh look, they are a bargain basement 9.95 on Ebay! To think of all the money I wasted...

I payed just over $425 for my Strider MB Karambit. If you think you can get a quality custom knife for $250, you are fooling yourself. Any monkey can buy a blade blank and slap some micarta on it. It takes a true craftsman to forge, shape, and properly temper his or her own blade, and that costs money.

What you are refering to is a cobbled together blade, not a custom made one. People who don't know a lot about blades often confuse the two.

And just so you know, a good production sword (Albion or AA) costs around or over $1000. Good custom swords (not Czech wall hangers) cost upwards of $5000.

while we are on the topic of great knives and strange prices, i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions (i was looking at the strider and zero tolerance knives, but living in washington they really frown on more than 3" folders and will be dicks and try and take the legal ones) i like the wider blade style and the knife will be used for all utility purposes. i currently have a kershaw ken onion but it just doesnt keep a good edge long enough.

Those ABS guys know a thing or two, but you should come to the New England Bladesmiths Guild meeting up in Ashokan. They'll teach you a few things.

Thanks! No damascus yet. Want to get carbon steel down well before I have to worry about proper welds, cold-shuts, inclusions, and patterns on top of everything else.

For general carry utility I like a simple no name lockback, on that is cheap and that I will not hesitate to use and or loose- for serious camping, or when I may realy need a blade I can count on, I like a victorinox, the new one with the easy opener blade that locks- thats for a folder mind you

For some of the high risk security gigs that I sometimes work, I like anything from a boker armed forces, a smith and wesson hrt folder, a smith and wesson power glide, a crkt mi6, or a cold steel voyager - basicly I pick for the job ( p.s. I own a knife and sword shop during the day) so really I am spoiled.

for camping I always have a cold steel panga mactete, cause it works as well as a light axe.....

for serious shit, I like my cold steel kobun

for survival, shhtf situations its a camilus airforce survival knife....

for normal carrying I have a benchmade pika ... good quality but pretty cheap

for car camping I've got a kukri machette from Himalayan Imports its an 18 inch 35 ounce Chiruwa Ang Khola

heavy, good for chopping and other stuff you might use a knife for... I've been really happy with it

I've been thinking about getting another smaller model for more general use, the Chiruwa AK is too big to carry around when weight is a concern.

HI makes some really nice knives... not all the kukri style and all come with lifetime warrantees and whatnot...

dont know that either of these could be called the best knife... but I like them... the best knife is aknife you can depend on completely to do its job and not fail... and these both do that.

JStrider, I love benchmade knives. Those are some nice fixed blades, there. I like a thick spine for getting the job done.

*The one below is a limited edition United Cutlery Anduril Sword (the sword from Lord of the Rings) - The limited edition (#1792 of 5000) was released just prior to the release of "Return of the King" in the movie theaters. Luckily I spotted them online because the price and demand shot up after the movie. It is numbered with a signed certificate by the production designer of the blades in the movie. I bought it for less than $200 and, last I checked, folks were selling on eBay for over $1000. Now I can't even find them on eBay but I'm still holding on to mine. They later made an "unlimited" version which didn't have all the detailing or the 24kt gold plated fittings, rune detailing or signed certificate from the production designer.

This one I'm keeping in the box for now.

I have a real Ghurka knife that a guy who served in Iraq gave me last Xmas though... thats pretty nice also.

Yeah, knives are pretty boring cutting tools. You don't use 'em for a whole lot outside opening packages, cutting 550 cord, etc.

I carry a Columbia River Crawford/Casper 4" folder in my Wannabe Manly-Man shooting rig next to a Leatherman Wave.

My daily carry knife is a stubby little 2" G10 Mouse knife by Bladetech. It hides up under my shirt in that useless 5th jean pocket.

Anything bigger is kinda silly.

I think the best knife is the knife that best suits whatever task needs to be accomplished AND is portable enough that you will actually have it on hand when you need it.

For me, whenever I leave the house I always have my SOG Aegis assisted opening knife with black tini blade and black handle.

I love this knife because it is extremely light (3.4 oz) yet has a 3.5" blade. It's so comfortable/light to carry I actually forget I have it on me, I almost washed them in a pair of pants because I didn't notice I was carrying it when I took the pants off.

It's sort of funny, whenever I am with friends or family and something needs to be opened or cut, they always ask me for my knife because I have the Aegis on me 100% of the time.

I haven't seen anything about Gerber knives, but I have a Gerber Air Ranger, It's about 60-70 depending on where you look, One of the lightest knives i have, out of the almost 50 I have, The blade knicks easy if you're cutting and it slips and ding something, but it's not too shabby. Another good pocket knife to carry is a Case knife, They are around 30+ depending on the model, but don't dull or knick as easily. I have a couple no namers that have served well from opening packages to cutting wood or rope. A good thing is every time you go on the road, stop at oddity shops and pick up a cheap knife, sometimes they are shit, and sometimes they become your number 1 carrying knife. If they suck, throw them in a box as a collectible. It's a win win.

I love CRKT knives for general use. Can't say I've ever been forced to (or trained for) use one for one in combat.

Thats the knife I own and carry with me. Sharp edge, looks sleak, and opens the easiest and smoothest of any other knife. The only negatives are that it costs quite a bit and is just a tad too heavy.

Rating: 9/10, 4 being average.

That Strider was ground by Mick Strider himself. The steel is BG-42 heat treated by Paul Bos, likely when he was still with Buck Knives in CA. Not sure what the "Series 1" stamp means aside from it must be an early design.

Canine Upright Location: Fort Bragg, NC / Kandahar Province, Afghanistan	I personally like the Seal Pup by SOG. I can't post a pic of it because my post count is too low sogknives.com/store/E37TS.html they're cheap and very high quality, made to be used, not looked at. Its 140USD on the manufacturer's site, but you can get them cheaper elsewhere (I paid 50 for mine in the PX on Fort Bragg) __________________ Awesome sig coming to a post near you!
